Hegseth is a hard-core Trump loyalist, with all the implications.

That's really all that matters, from either side's perspective.

What that means is that Hegseth will default to Trump's command or wish to violate the insurrection act and deploy the military domestically, and "War Powers Resolution".

Hegseth has no qualms, no checks or balance there, all "yes" man. That's why Trump nominated him, and that's the only "qualification" that matters.

My view on Hegseth is that he can't be any worse than the professional politicians in uniform and the Military-Industrial complex shills that we have had running the DoD for the last what 20 years or more.

He's voicing support for policies that the line soldiers (both current and ex) I know have been complaining of lacking in the military of late.

Will he be successful or is he just a Trump shill in a soldier suit?

I don't know.

But as far as I go, the job of the military is to be lethal. Kill people and break things. Anything that compromises that is something outside the DoD.

You want to bring democracy to Iran? That's the state department's job. If they fail, then the DoD is supposed to kill the other guy until they stop being a threat to the US. The politician's job is to declare something a threat.
