28 Trillion Now. 25% of our total national debt incurred over the last 230 years actually occurred during the 4 years of the Trump administration. And the deficits belong to:

So you see how very important it is for the House GOP to shut the Government down and default on our debt. Not a peep out of the Freedom Caucus during Trump's out of control spending but now when a Dem is sitting in the White House they are suddenly fiscally conservative. Priorities I guess, the top tax bracket has seen it's tax rate reduced by 47% since 1980, those poor folks must be starving

There is no effort to stop inflation, only to contain it within the boundaries needed to devalue the federal debt and its associated interest payments. Plan on a rising level of prices and a somewhat smaller increase in incomes. Bonds will take a beating, the surviving stocks can float higher on increased revenues. TomP Our country, right or wrong. When right, to be kept right, when wrong to be put right. Carl Schurz (1829 - 1906)

Debt was shooting up before the Pandemic. And for the record, it was Trump who declared the national emergency and almost died of Covid. For a fellow Texan you really can't face up to facts.

We might like to think this was the case, and it certainly played a part, but it is more of an excuse than a reason. Trump would have run a deficit anyway, because deficit spending is part of his DNA. The Democrats are even worse and have never wasted an opportunity to waste money. The American people are so used to this, from both parties, that they tend to ignore it. Regards, Bill.

The spike was due to COVID — fact. Spending today still exceeds 2019. Trump spent too much agreed…still conservative comparatively to Democrats. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. I think you have causality wrong. I’d agree that Covid allowed it to happen, but not that Covid caused it. Trump was a populist. He knew all kinds of money would be expected to be thrown around by the usual suspects… so he threw it around and played piddly little games so that he would be seen as the good guy source of the bennies. I agree this dramatic expansion was Trump’s fault. He could have held the line and demanded his party do as well. He didn’t. He and a number of GOP’ers were more concerned about being labeled as the reason you didn’t get yours or killing grandma that they were co-opted. If you are at the top, it’s your responsibility to take a principled stand and pay the price if you are wrong. Trump didn’t take a principled stand, and still lost. To hell with him.

Had I been in charge…we would not have spent anything except for vaccine and treatment research and development. I would have told people it was coming and what practical precautions they could take and let the world carry on. The fact remains however…through 2019…we were in way better shape than we are today. We have not gotten back to a 2019 economy and spending way more even without the pandemic. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J.
