What?
If Hamas wasn't there id like a condo on the beach!
Wasn't Beirut beautiful before the PLO or whoever took over?

I like the forward thinking of urban renewal and development. All that ghetto seen in the picture of the beach would make fine foundations for resorts, light commercial development and some heavy industrial/ military marine and airports.

I think I can already see the docks for cruise ships and a seaplane base for tourist scenic excursions.

Foreign invaders have been interfering since the cave men walked the earth.

It’s evolution, Saeed - it doesn’t play nice or have any relationship to ethics, morals or compassion.

The stronger kill the weaker, greedy trample the generous and take their possessions, be it land, resources or women and they get even stronger. It doesn’t matter which animal species it is. Our species is nowhere near as advanced or civilized as we like to think we are.

Something I can agree with TW on.

Doesn't make it right though.

You judge a society by how it cares for its weakest members.

Confused

Who's got the best socialism wins?

I don't remember historical Persia, Israel, Babylon, Great Zimbabwe, the Aztec or Inca empires being particularly empathetic.

As the Palestinians hide war material in hospitals and kindergarten classrooms, (still, today!) Id think they figure pretty low on the "care for the weakest" scale.

Who do you judge as the weakest in any society? The elderly, the sick, kids, the mentally ill, the handicapped? Are you OK with looking at them and thinking "screw you suckers" as you drive past?

You have the luxury of living in the US where (to some degree) the vulnerable and weak are cared for. You have a daughter, Im not sure how old she is but as you never know quite what life will throw at you how about if you lived in Pakistan and she hypothetically lost all her family and was on her own? No Child Protective Services there. How would you rate Pakistan (or anywhere similar) with child labor, child marriage, sexual exploitation, FGM, the list is endless vs somewhere which offer the weak some support and protection?

I was paraphrasing (possibly badly) something which Ghandi is supposed to have said but I think more accurately was something an American writer said a good few years ago. If you class that as socialism that's up to you, it's just a decent society to me.

I quoted Tumbleweed, my post is specifically a response to what he wrote. Go read it, neither of us mentioned Gaza, but as you did it applies equally to the sick, elderly, children, wounded there. Hamas are tunnelling under hospitals but how is that the fault of the patients or the 5 year old kids that lives next door?

You don’t understand, Nute!

As long as you wave a Bible, or a Quran or a Torah scroll with one hand as you throw the grenade with the other, it’s perfectly all right!

You can go home and get your medal from the Government who you served, on behalf of the ‘stronger’ billionaires who own the government , and sleep the sleep of the patriot. The trick is, just don’t think about it. Be a good little ‘servant of the Lord’ and do as you’re told. Your superiors can perceive Gods Will and you can’t, so don’t question it. Never, under any circumstances, think past the front sight of your M16.

Oh, and those Holy Books? Don’t read them, whatever you do. Just wave them. If you read them, you might start getting notions that could seriously disrupt your sleep. They say disturbing things like “Love thy neighbor as thyself” and “The meek shall inherit the earth.”

On the other hand, just having your picture taken waving one (even upside down) can get you elected POTUS. You need to know your audience.

Who cares, as long as they sell me T-shirts for $0.87 that I can sell in my 10,586 Walmarts for $15.99 plus tax?

I like the profit margin, my government likes the ‘tax’ part, and my customers like the T-shirts. I can do that because I’m STRONG, and that allows me to take from you and become even stronger.

Yes, it’s sickening to some of us. As individuals we have (well some of us anyway) a sense of compassion and fairness. But again, those who have none are stronger and conquer those weaker who do.

If it bothers me to cut your throat, I won’t. If it doesn’t bother you to cut mine, you probably will. Pretty soon the throat cutters outnumber the ‘won’t cutters’. That, unfortunately, is the way of all species.

On the bright side, we fail to recognize own insignificance. Really, all we are is a rather nasty little cluster of malignant biological anomalies behaving badly while we wait for our sun to fart.

Actually that's what sets us apart from all other species. The ability to know right from wrong, having a moral compass, knowing good from bad, ethics, and integrity. Just my opinion, YMMV.

Why bother with a burdensome moral compass when there a cleric on every street corner who’ll sell you absolution for a very reasonable price?

Prostitution might be the worlds oldest profession, but the self appointed revenue agents of the deity(s) are only a moment more recent.

Anyway, if your duly elected leader says ”I prayed on it, and God wants us to invade Iraq” what’s a man to do?

You go to war “with the army you have, not the army you want” and get your ass shot off for the greater glory of Halliburton and Martin Marietta, and who gives a fat shit if you come home with all the appendages you left with. You shot the people we told you to, you got your damn medal, now go away and shut up.

A moral compass is only any good if you actually follow the needle.

The great part about trying to be a good parent is that you have a voice in the decision making regarding the society and culture you live in.

Me? I wouldn't choose Pakistan as a father and would make every effort to remove me and mine from such a place. I also choose to not reside in any American urban center and make every effort to no more than occasionally visit the outskirts.

Yes, it certainly is not the fault of the five year olds that Hamas tunnels in, under, thru and around Palestinians hospitals, I suppose if we're laying blame we'd have to ask the Palestinian parents of the five year olds why they comply, assist, advocate for and keep secret those activities.
Not a very, "decent society,".

I like Ghandi, I respect everything about him and I believe he was possibly universally correct on any subject.

Unfortunately my nation has never come close to being able to adequately provide care for the vulnerable or weak. Malnutrition, sexual violence, homelessness, substance abuse, other violent crime and average bad health is something all our vulnerable and weak experience if left to government services to safeguard against. There isn't a homeless American that hasn't been the victim of criminal violence, not one.

Who will provide for my daughter, (age 7,) me. Me entirely and unequivocally. That's my obligation, my guarantee, m commitment. If I or anyone else on the pf, any other father in the world considered anything less they have the door cracked open to defeat, to failure as a father. Not me Mister.

As for the "suckers" you mentioned above, I have long thought America makes a damnable mistake in prioritizing the people of Sudan and Somalia, Ukraine and the Kurds over our fellow Americans.

All these years later we still watch the movie, "Blackhawk Down" lionizing the bravery and heroics of our Army Rangers and Delta Force in Somalia. America failed of course there, horribly failed.

I'd like to watch a movie about how the Rangers and Delta Force were peacefully deployed to Oakland CA or Minneapolis MN to pass out lunches, haul off abandoned cars and man temporary health clinics. That would be a movie about a first, an actual, honest first time an American government did any good for its "weak and vulnerable".

Pretty hard to afford that stuff with aircraft carriers being $13 billion apiece.
