new security deal will see the US station troops and warships in Papua New Guinea (PNG), adding a pivotal force to take on China should tensions over Taiwan spiral into conflict.

The 15-year pact adds the country to a growing list of alliances in the region with the aim of hemming in Beijing's influence.

Last month, Secretary of State Antony Blinken signed the deal in Port Moresby - the capital of the nearly 180,000 square mile country in the South Pacific.

Sitting just north of Australia, it could offer the military a crucial staging ground in a potential fight against China.

"We're deeply invested in the Indo-Pacific because our planet's future is being written here," Blinken said at the deal's signing.

Unless you're prepared to shoot, which seems unlikely, China will just go on it's merry way.

PNG! wow! did not see that coming. Figured when I saw the headline it was about the Philippines.
Seems like a worthwhile repost too the situation in the Solomon's.

I can rightfully complain about a lot of things for which this administration has failed, but I must applaud on it for this achievement. An above post is correct that the Chinese will not give a flip, unless “no” becomes a part of the Biden vocabulary. Hopefully we will see that.

I’ll bet that the Vietnamese, the Filipinos, the Japanese, and the Koreans are ecstatic. As a caveat, I pray that Taiwan is not a pawn, being sacrificed to get permission from the Chinese to do this. I would not be surprised, unfortunately. Hopefully, the Senate will have a hearing and ask that question before they vote for funding for this base.

Dang, I wish I were not so skeptical, but my fears are very based in past realities.

Are you saying that you support US expansion of military into the territory claimed as sovereign to China?

Hmm--
considering NZ has essentially no missile defense system,
a skeletonized navy
and no interceptor ,fighter or bomber aircraft--

just exactly what positioning in the southern pacific rim do you deem appropriate for the US ?

(since by treaty, as well as, other agreements we are expected to defend you)

Dugga. That wasn't a question sporting my opinion. That was a question for Saeed given his opinions over the last while on America.

I support US engagement in the pacific and I also think NZ should be doing way more as far as self defence gos. Including getting rid of the outdated nuclear ban.

I’m sure slo jo will take a hardline stance like his Democratic predecessor, JFK. NOT! kind of like OBO took with Syria about use of chemical weapons being crossing a line in the sand. Of course when Al Assad used them a few months later, the line moved. Obviously lines are a moving target…. coffee

I thought we got done with Paupa New Guinea 80 years ago. 2020

I'm not sure I see the need for a new footprint. We have naval superiority, air superiority, the same in space.

What can a "boots on the ground" footprint achieve better than a missile, a submarine or an aircraft carrier?

I don't get it.

This isn't a reply too your entire post. Just a thought re aircraft carriers.
There is a thought out there that the new hypersonic missiles ( Ok maybe not the Russian ones) might pose a significant threat too warships including aircraft carriers. If so that could meen a major disruption to US naval dominance.

Most current hypersonic missiles are capable of hitting stationary targets.
At high speeds it has been noted a plasma build up on the surface of the missile limiting some communication capability as far as guidance in a new direction to impact a moving target.
That is how the Russian hypersonic missiles were intercepted. They had to slow down prior to impact where they were vulnerable to intercept. Note they were programed to hit stationary targets.

For every measure there is soon a counter measure.

True.

And in our modern times it doesn’t take long to neutralize anything.

Year and years ago civilizations ruled for thousands of years.

Nowadays no country can claim superiority over all others.

For a bit after WW2 America became the strongest coupon earth.

The respect and position they had didn’t last very long.

Mainly due to their selfish policies for their own benefits at a great cost to others.

Funny how they are destroying their own society right now!

And no, I am not happy about it, and I bet most Americans aren’t either.

And now the Cuba is negotiating with China to build a joint military training facility in Cuba.

I wonder if this would be happening if President Obama’s normalization with scuba had stuck?

No way to know.

Are you guys serious? All we're going to be doing is filling it full of Chinese made crap.

If the USA is wanting to put the halt to China, we need to rebuild our manufacturing industry. If we set our minds to supplying the world with affordable, quality made items China would eventually cease to be a threat, might take a few decades but we didn't get here overnight either.

Anyway, only thing a PNG base will do IMHO is make a bunch of contractors wealthier than what they are now.

Possible I'm sure, I wouldn't really know.

But if the enemy missile didn't work, id think they're in for a bummer of a time. Looks to me like a US aircraft carrier packs a punch.

I was told by a submariner that when Russia used to go to sea for war ga.es between it's destroyers and submarines our American submarines would be in amongst them all undetected. The baboons couldn't catch themselves, nevermind us.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/d...heck-out-this-graph/

Of the 68 submarines the US currently has afloat, who can do what?

If I remember correctly, Eisenhower and Kennedy disagreed on the arms race. Kennedy wanted to continue to build to outpace the USSR and Eisenhower said something to the effect of " if we already have enough nukes to destroy earth, why build more?" Did the world need blowing up more than once?

If America already has military bases in half the nations on earth, I'm not sure I see how another will help.
