Mike MitchellEven Ted Cruz understands what a problem trump accepting the plane from Qatar is...
“I am not a fan of Qatar,” Cruz told CNBC on Tuesday. “I think they have a really disturbing pattern of funding theocratic lunatics who want to murder us, funding Hamas and Hezbollah, and that’s a real problem.”

I know which one is waste.
That is one big deal.
The other big deal is the Constitution does not permit this.
The third big deal is that it appears to be buying the influence of our Chief Executive who serves pursuant to the Constitution as our chief diplomat. Of you cannot see the issues with this you are either willfully ignorant.
The idea that a person should not enrich themselves while in office from the Office goes back to the Articles of Confederation:
N]or shall any person holding any office of profit or trust under the United States, or any of them, accept any present, emolument, office or title of any kind whatever from any King, Prince or foreign State.
This was actually an idea taken from the Dutch. The Dutch rule from the Enlightenment forbid their foreign ministers from taking “any presents, directly or indirectly, in any manner or way whatever. This was motivated by a fear of corruption. This new rule was alien to customary international relations.
When the Constitution of 1787 was debated and drafted by the Philadelphia Convention, early drafts had no provision akin to the Articles of Confederation’s Foreign Emoluments Clause. However, towards the end of the Convention, on August 23, 1787, Charles Pinckney “urged the necessity of preserving foreign Ministers & other officers of the U. S. independent of external influence,” and he moved to insert a provision closely tracking the language in the Articles. Ultimately, Pinckney’s provision became Article I, Section 9, Clause 8. The provision occasioned little other recorded debate. However, at the Virginia ratifying convention, Governor Edmund Randolph explained:
This restriction was provided to prevent corruption. . . . An accident, which actually happened, operated in producing the restriction. A box was presented to our ambassador by the king of our allies. It was thought proper, in order to exclude corruption and foreign influence, to prohibit any one in office from receiving or holding any emoluments from foreign states.
Text. As explained, the Constitution’s Foreign Emoluments Clause (also known as the Emoluments Clause, Gifts Clause, Foreign Gifts Clause, and Foreign Titles Clause) was modeled on its Articles of Confederation predecessor. The original Articles of Confederation provision provided:
[N]or shall any person holding any office of profit or trust under the United States, or any of them, accept any present, emolument, office or title of any kind whatever from any King, Prince or foreign State.
Whereas the Constitution’s Foreign Emoluments Clause now provides:
[N]o Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them [i.e., the United States], shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.
Thus, the modern Foreign Emoluments Clause’s text departed from its Confederation-era predecessor in two distinct ways. First, the modern Foreign Emoluments Clause, unlike its predecessor, expressly permitted Officers . . . under the United States to accept gifts from foreign governments if those officers had the consent of Congress. Some believe that this subclause introduced a substantive change, but others believe that it merely codified the prior practice of the Articles Congress.
That is the big deal.
I doubt Congress is going to let this get over.
One day we will run out of money…what then?
So starting some kinda saving is probably pretty good idea

Where's the saving spending a billion or two on a plane that the government likely will never use just so some orange grifter can get it for free?

Internet speculates that Qatar wanted to get rid of the plane anyway, in favor of smaller ones with more available destinations. I doubt they can sell it as is, but they can maybe trade it for something...

Yeah...ha ha

. The DOD now has a plane that by conservative estimates will require hundreds of millions of dollars in security and communication upgrades that you and I can pay for....all so trump will have a new plane to fly around in after he leaves office. Ridiculous.
And, I'm still waiting to hear how this isn't a violation of the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. Here's how that reads, by the way:
"No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State."
You explain to us how trump being gifted a $400mm jet from Qatar doesn't violate this provision of the Constitution.
I read that operating costs for this thing are 23,000 per hour. Which is why it has very few hours on it. Just a little side trivia along with the main point that it is illegal.
22 May 2025, 20:44
jeffeossoAccepting the plane is stupid. It will have to be striped and every molecule examined... every wiring connector, every inch of wiring, every spar, every rivet (very little composites on a 747) everything... all the panels, all the rivets, even testing on the spar... BEFORE building back.
The concept of potus on a free plane is dumbfounding
And it's still a grossly inefficient 747. The operation costs are huge.. 50k per hour isnt unknown

ANTELOPEDUNDEEWe don't know for sure if it's a gift or we are buying it. Since Congress hasn't given its blessing we can assume it was paid for in some way.
Here is a good comment from the comments section in a Yahoo article about it.
""I don't want luxury as a symbol for America. I do not believe potus is a symbol of luxury either. Potus is a servant, not a personification of the Elite, like trump believes all power and wealth should be. Potus should be professional, wise, well versed, gifted at articulation and can quickly process relevant data. Not draped in gold, pandering to loyalists, declaring only his policy beliefs are patriotic or valid (sometimes by punishment of law, despite Constitution), not a symbol and representative of the Elite. A symbol of service and dedication to the Constitution and the People. If that means normal upholstery and beds instead of elephant leather and ostrich feather mattress on AF1, so be it.""

If you are referring to me then happily to say, am not residing in that shit hole, never been there and don't intend going to either.
At times we folks living in Third World countries have a lot less stress than those living in the "civilized" world; with us its mostly the daily SOS (Same Old Shit) so we know how to plan ahead. We lack nothing otherwise and certainly don't have to worry about the price of eggs which BTW costs $5.40 per tray (24 eggs).

Oh, we don't have all the shootings you Americans experience on a regular basis in malls, schools and anywhere else that a wacko might fancy.
We don't have protests and demonstrations where the Police stand around looking stupid; any sign of unrest in this part of the world is promptly taken care of in the most efficient way possible.
South Africa unfortunately has gone to the dogs
and there is no chance of recovery; not during our time that's for sure and your Orange Turd made no bones about it during his meeting with Ramaphosa.

BobsterNews reports seem to indicate that Trump is accepting it as a gift to the USA and not a personal gift. It's kinda like back-in-the-day when tribal leaders would offer one of their daughters as a peace gesture to an enemy. Qatar just wants us to stay off their asses. The objective here is to try not to hurt their little feelings. I'd accept it on behalf of the USA and say thank you. Then I'd fly it to Seattle for re-fit. While there, pull the switcheroo with a purpose-built model for AF1. The real Qatari plane would then be re-painted and used to transport illegals out-of-country. That would make everybody happy-except the illegals.

BobsterSince Presidential Libraries are not the property of ex-presidents, it would not benefit Trump. This would likely be classified as an artifact of a presidency. Kinda like transferring it to the Smithsonian.
Presidential Libraries
"The Presidential Library system is composed of sixteen Presidential Libraries. These facilities are overseen by the Office of Presidential Libraries. Presidential Libraries are archives and museums, bringing together the documents and artifacts of a President and his administration and presenting them to the public for study and discussion without regard for political considerations or affiliations."

News reports seem to indicate that Trump is accepting it as a gift to the USA and not a personal gift.
Since it would be transferred to his presidential library, it's essentially a gift to him.

Does it say that a living ex president has use of real property transferred to the library?
The whole thing STINKS of improprieties and WASTED taxpayer money.

BobsterThe only thing that stinks is your inability/unwillingness to understand facts.
1. The aircraft was accepted by the Pentagon to be used for US government business.
2. The aircraft is a gift to the USA valued in excess of $400 million dollars.
3. Sometime after the end or the Trump presidency, it will be transferred to the Trump Presidential Library for conservation and display.
Therefore, it has saved the American taxpayer at least $400 million dollars. Hardly a waste of our money. More like a windfall.

The current AF One is adequate to do the Government's business for the rest of his term however long that might be. No need to spend a billion + exorbitant operating costs just to pacify his vain ass. So no, we haven't saved $400 million.

theback40Fit it with bookshelves, it can be his library, if he likes it so much.

BobsterYou are dense. The aircraft is 20 years overdue for replacement. It was scheduled years ago and contracted with Boeing.

LHeym500What is tense is defending buying a jet for 400 million, then spending another 1-2 billion rebuilding the thing, and using some creative thinking to get around the Constitution.
The jet as is, is not safe nor fit to transport a president. That is not debatable. President Trump is getting a direct benefit to to tone of 1-2.4 billion all in from a foreign power and US tax payers.
There is no justification for this.

BobsterDamn! This must be contagious, or you are deep into the bourbon by now. You sound a few neurons shy of a frontal lobe. We didn't buy the bloody jet; it is being given to us. All Presidential vehicles are purchased and re-built at an exorbitant cost. They are all one-off deals. That is the way it is/has been and the cost of protecting the CIC. This jet is being given to us and being re-built. You got a problem with saving money, or are you just drunk and having one of your outbursts again?
