That’s the terrorist/freedom fighter syndrome, with a twist.

You might recall the U.S. regarding the Mujahideen as freedom fighters, and went to great lengths to arm and fund them. The moment they actually used those arms and funds to actuate that ‘freedom’ they became the Taliban, and hence ‘terrorists’.
