Don't laugh too soon, the "larger conversation" might include the Arabs who were the middle men in the slave trade, and with more than Africans.

How come no one in America talks about the Muslims who had the whole slave trade thingy down in Africa in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries? And no one certainly talks about the local tribes who would hunt down others for the sole, express purpose of selling them to the slave traders. How come?
