African famines are only tangentially affected by wars - these are regions where the population density is constantly bumping up against the ability of the land to sustain it.

In good years everyone eats enough, screws like rabbits and makes more babies that they don’t need. When it doesn’t rain, they starve. It’s that simple. You’re looking at the very base level of our species. The more you feed them, the more they reproduce. You’ll never catch up, and you’ll never cure the problem.

Is Dubai any different than Europe or US or Canada when they bring emigrants to do work others won’t do or not enough labor in particular state or country?

Dubai is different in that they do not give the folks they bring in a real pathway to citizenship, and if they get fired/disabled, back home they go.

It’s relatively easy to have a social safety net when it only applies to about 10% of your gross population/workforce.

Saeed brags about the UAE’s medical services- and if you are a citizen, it is quite comprehensive, but what happens to the guy who is working there and has an accident and is permanently disabled? He has said, no job, you are out.

Quite different than the west where we are expected to take care of them and their extended families thereafter…

Mercenaries are not exactly a safe option.

Not paying attention to one’s security is a bad idea… and that is the primary role of government.

Africans have been starving since I have been on the planet. Their rulers like it that way. The population is easier to control, and other countries send millions in aid. Corrupt gov't officials confiscate most of the aid at the borders or as tribute. The people get little. That leads to more pictures of starving people and more aid, etc.,etc. The govt's also herd the people into non-productive areas where it is next to impossible to grow crops and animals. The west then sends in food. What little makes it to the people ends up putting the farmers out of business because they can't compete with free food. It is a never ending cycle, totally man made.
