We hear a lot about how much crime costs the American People and, particularly, corporations, and I stumbled across a fascinating article that pulls together some of the actual numbers: The FBI places the annual cost of the most commonly-cited crimes, things like burglary, robbery and shoplifting, at about $16 billion. White-collar crime like Fraud, embezzlement and money laundering comes in at $300 billion, per year. Almost 20 years worth of robbery and shoplifting. Three-quarters of white-collar criminals are white males. The whole thing is worth a read: Link "If you’re innocent why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?”- Donald Trump

Yet we have folks here, including lawyers, dismissing white collar crime and fraud. It is “lawfare” to go after people lying on certified financial statements to secure millions of dollars of loans on more favorable terms than would otherwise be available. Mike

Those same lawyers are fine with a Supreme Court decision decided by a 5-4 vote with all 5 Justices in the majority finding a different basis for their decision deciding what the Constitution means, if it goes their way, but insist a jury verdict returned unanimously is flawed fatally if the jurors aren't required to agree on the exact same means. As a lawyer I would think you would get it…but you don’t. It becomes “lawfare” when it is used selectively and beyond the realms of precedent. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. Exactly! Hunter would have been convicted long ago on many charges had he not been a Biden. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. I have heard up to 400 billion. If you figure Madoff was good for 20 billion himself. Most regular people dont care about white collar crime. They see it as rich folks stealing from each other. The shoplifting shows up in increased prices in the stores for everyday products. One affects them, the other affects rich folks in their minds.

So in your world you figure corporations recover the loss of $16.99 worth of shoplifted Pampers by raising prices but the $300,000 the purchasing manager submits fake invoices for they just, what, take out of executive bonuses? Maybe reduce shareholder dividends? Even you can't be that dumb. "If you’re innocent why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?”- Donald Trump

Do you know how to read? Did you see anywhere that is my take on it? I simply read what is reported and commented on it. Dont like it? Tough shit. Tell me genius. When these flash mobs go in and pillage a store, do the stores just suck up the loss time after time? Get your head out of your ass once in awhile and think.

Or, to go after folks who try to characterize blackmail payments to hooker porn stars as a deductible legal expense. I mean, everybody does that, right? -Every damn thing is your own fault if you are any good.

Let me explain something jeffie. The more insurance is used, the more it goes up. Insurance co. are not in business to go broke either. Look up retail theft by the way, your numbers conflict with everything out there. 2023 retail theft was 121 billion, expected to reach 150 billion by 2026.

Yeah, insurance is the only business I'm aware of that when you try to use the benefit they promise you, the benefit suddenly gets more expensive. Makes zero sense...for everybody but the insurance company. It's really pretty amazing that we all go along with it...no choice, I guess. It's like when insurance companies pull out of markets when people actually start using the flood or hurricane insurance that they have been paying for, sometimes for decades. Whoever thought up the insurance business was a pure-ass genius. They are happy to collect those premiums until the time comes when they have to start paying the benefits that they agreed to pay in return for those premiums. Then, suddenly, their business model doesn't seem like such a good idea. -Every damn thing is your own fault if you are any good.

The other part is burglary/robbery/shoplifting is also much more associated with violence than white collar crime. TB40’s numbers sound much more like what I have heard. There are a lot more small time crooks out there than folks in a position to steal 10’s of thousands of dollars at a time.

You got that right Mike. Here, because you have to have car insurance, if to many companies drop you for claims, you go into a "pool" Whoever draws you has to take you on as a client. They can charge almost anything they want when you are in an insurance pool. I'm guessing insurance and banks are in things together. A bank will not loan on high risk area projects, and insurance wont cover them. They can each lay the blame on the other. It shouldnt be that way, but the regulators let them.

Instead of being political jerk-offs and deciding which crime we should and should not care about, we could actually prosecute all of them. Nah, that's crazy.

So, if I'm reading this right, shoplifting, burglary, and robbery are no big deal in the scheme of things. White collar crime, because it is perpetrated by white males, is truly heinous. Reading between the lines, the party affiliation of the perpetrator is an important consideration as well. Navaluk has the best take on it, I think. Regards, Bill
