I gave $100 to NC hurricane relief. Doesnt amount to anything really, but wanted to do something.
I wanted to do the same for the LA fires, but to be honest, didnt know where to give that it would actually be put to use and not sucked into a black hole of bureaucracy.
I feel good about my giving to, T to T. with 95 cents out of a dollar being put to real use. My 11$ a month, goes unnoticed to me, but is helping who I want to support the most.

Who here does not believe the guy building the bridge doesn't subsidize the lifestyle of the guy taking credit for the bridge? The truth is the ruling class always takes from the working class and never gives back commensurate with what is taken. This applies to democracies, socialist states, oligarchies, or monarchies.
It is truly too bad the work being attempted by Musk couldn't be done by an honest independent entity, but it doesn't seem like such a thing exists. Playing the long game by trying to prevent radicalization of youth in foreign countries, is not a terrible idea. Monitoring the spending vs. the benefit is not a bad idea either. Paying for wokeism in potentially adversarial nations might not be a bad idea either. Then they can be just as effed-up as we are.
My point is, as usual, nothing is black and white. If Musk exposes waste and corruption, that is a good thing. If Musk, or his people, profit greatly by doing so, that is just more of the same old bullshit under a new name.
We will never eliminate waste and corruption in government, but that doesn't mean we should not try to do so. Partisan watchdogs are unlikely to be uniformly successful in ferreting out waste (they will always have blinders on) but at least an effort is being made.
Lies by both sides will, of course, continue. That is the American way. Media outlets, regardless of their slant, will continue to blow smoke up our collective ass. Musk is doing what he is because it needs to be done. It needs to be done because nobody else has ever done it. I don't believe the purging of waste will be done equitably or even effectively, but an attempt is at least being made. Those squealing the loudest are likely to be those most deserving of a good purging. Regards, Bill.

When we define govt spending waste, misappropriate, misallocate and clean up thereof logically rather than ideological, and based specifically on evidence rather than arbitrarily for the sake of cuts, then we have something worth discussing.

What Musk, Trump and all supporters are doing is pure ideological. I haven't seen any evidence reported otherwise. It's easy to say "clean up" but show some proof of what specifically is being cleaned up. Otherwise you are just blowing ideological smoke.

So, for now the discussion revolves around lies and belief and attempting to counter that with facts.

The thing is that Musk is not honest, and his conflict of interest is the first clue. Also, he is NOT exposing waste and corruption in context, which is also dishonest. It appears for certain that what he and Trump are doing is corrupting the checks and balances on themselves and fellow billionaires and oligarchs. Is that not corruption?

And the "honest independent entity" idea - that has obstackles. Isn't that what congress is supposedly for? How's that working?

For one thing, Musk apparently has GOPer congress approval, since they are not stopping it. And he's acting rather independently of congress, at the will of Trump. Is not Musk and exec branch appointee and isn't DOGE all exec branch? When was the last time Trump was honest?

The full scope of this is dishonest. It ties directly to what got Trump elected, which is lies. Claiming "clean up" with no objective evidence of what is being cleaned and how that ties to congress appropriations and goals of the appropriation is a dishonest lie.

You can't have an honest outcome with dishonest means.

IOW, the end does not justify the means, and in this case neither the "end" or the "means" is what they say it is.

In my opinion (always suspect), a person tasked with this job should not be elected but should be appointed by the Boy Scouts of America. They are more likely to be impartial and practical that any branch of government. The ideal appointee would probably be a guy (or gal) who has had to live within limited means. Someone with some experience with real world finances. Someone who understands where the money comes from. Someone who believes doing a job means getting it done.
This said tongue in cheek, of course, but having privileged partisan hacks run things is what has gotten us to where we are and that's not in a good place.
I think what Musk is doing is tearing a lot of stuff down, some of which should not be. Maybe it can be built back properly and be efficient, effective and transparent. There is a need for federal oversight. There is a need for federal administration. There is also a need for accountability at all levels. What Musk is doing may not be ideal, but it is better than doing nothing. Regards, Bill
