Zuckerberg has admitted that the government pressured them to remove Covid “disinformation” that has been proven correct: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=...Y2Vuc29yc2hpcA%3D%3D

We know that the FBI worked to have Hunter Biden’s laptop buried as “Russian disinformation” even after they knew that the laptop was legit.

ME and SS,

Are you guys really in favor of the government being able to censor speech on social media? Would you be still feel the same if Trump, or some other crackpot, has his team censoring your speech on social media?

Zuckerburg didn't use the word "government". Others did.

He used the word "establishment".

BTW, I'm very glad that we have regulatory agencies of the Fed, such as FDA, EPA, FCC, and all the rest, and I want them to be empowered to do their jobs effectively. I would rather they err on the side of caution than cater to rightists' narratives.

I'm sick of Rightists spinning everything that doesn't suit their presuppositions, and ideology. It's standard M.O. and I don't trust any of it.

Having dealt directly with the FDA, the EPA and the FAA - in general they create a more dysfunctional dynamic than a functional one.

Yes, we all know what the rightists' mean when they say smaller govt.

They want to go back to this - before the FDA:

And before the EPA:

And they want social media to be like the wild west.

And so forth.

My word, you liberals and your strawman arguments. No one is saying that the FDA or any other independent body should not be able to “do their job”, unless you contend that censorship of “protected free speech” is part of their job? And we all know that none of these agencies are tasked with censoring free speech, so why do you frame it as such?

What is the purpose of introducing a strawman argument, except to obscure an uncomfortable truth that one wants to ignore?

Ya’ll outta be ashamed of your intellectual dishonesty… But you tricked Lane into taking the bait and railing against the FDA, so maybe you have succeeded in reframing the argument into one in which you have solid footing?

But that is not how a discussion should work, is it?

The post is about limiting the the ability of our government to censor speech on social media. The opening paragraph of Lane’s article:

quote:
WASHINGTON, July 4 (Reuters) - A U.S. federal judge on Tuesday restricted some agencies and officials of the administration of President Joe Biden from meeting and communicating with social media companies to moderate their content, according to a court filing.

Also from the article:
quote:
The ruling said government agencies like the Department of Health and Human Services and the FBI could not talk to social media companies for "the purpose of urging, encouraging, pressuring, or inducing in any manner the removal, deletion, suppression, or reduction of content containing protected free speech" under the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution

It is clear that government agencies can still talk to social media sites about addressing misinformation with public service announcements and such, but they aren’t allowed to discuss censoring “protected free speech”.

If you want to argue that the government should be able to censor free speech, then have the backbone to argue that, instead of hiding behind your straw-man…

The FDA and EPA have done good for the nation no doubt.

But in the latter 20th they have quit “serving” and have taken on a life of themselves…with their own agendas.

Making them back into the humble servants of the people is the conservative position.

But yes, with rare exception, social media should be be free and open to all speech. Today, it is the “conversation” of the people. Regulating it is no different than telling you what you can talk to your fishing buddies about in the coffee shop.
