I think the “appointment” is not quite what is being reported. It most probably a vehicle to shut down the House committees investigations. The DOJ has consistently tried to hide information from oversight claiming “ongoing investigation”. This is only a a license for the DOJ to double down on its continuing obstruction and coverups.

Weiss tried to protect Joe, Hunter, Garland (personally), the FBI and the IRS from the Congress. He’s just been rewarded and now has been “promoted” for doing so. Why would someone reappoint him if they didn’t want the same malfeasance as before?

What’s amazing is the belief of many that Garland is anything but a weasel. Character is not a virtue with which he has familiarity.

The appointment happened because the US Attorney in charge of the Hunter Biden investigation asked to be appointed as special counsel.

Forced the DOJ's hand. Declining that request would have resulted in a shitstorm for the DOJ.

You're dead wrong about Weiss (trump appointee, by the way). He thinks there is more to find out about Hunter Biden and he needs special counsel subpoena power to find out. Now, he has it. Any sort of thought process that this is some kind of political cover for Hunter Biden is seriously flawed. It's not going to get better for Hunter Biden, it is going to get exponentially worse.

The House Committee investigations are bullshit. Gym Jordan can run his mouth but an appointed special counsel has ten times the stroke. Brings the courts and criminal penalties into play, not just Gym's bullshit.

The statements about the Hunter case going to trial are way premature. Looks like the plea deal is in jeopardy but with this appointment, it's a new ballgame in terms of what sort of plea deal might eventually result.

The only issue with this plea deal not being dead is Weiss is reportedly going to dismiss it in Delaware and refill in California.

No, this particular plea is not coming back.
