Who can make a custom bullet for me?

OK, so I got to thinking: Take the Sierra 300 gr Match King in .338 caliber. Extrapolate all dimensions out by the same ratio to make it a .458 caliber bullet. This should make one mean, high BC .458 Match King .... To reduce bearing surface and fouling, perhaps make it a bore rider or "grooved" design. Guesstimate puts it at 700-750 gr weight.

So who can I ask to make me a bunch?

Try GS Custom, have them build you some .458 cal HV bullets. It may take quite some time to get them from what I've read. 700-750 grains with about the same friction down the bore as a 300 grain bullet would be intense!! GS only has the .458 HV's listed up to 450 grains.

GS will take too long! Ask Walterhog. He has access to Saeed's CNC lathe, and he can turn out these bullets in whatever material you like.

It's OK

i am stuck doing up 300 grain .458 Diam jacketed bullet's
anyway i need to finish those out first.
And i would need to know what wall thickness he want's and
a picture or drawing of the bullet and the degree's and tapper's etc etc anyway

I also will be doing bullet Diam/s in .510 soon

.510's? Sweet. That's the other flavor he would need. Try emailing him, he's got an email address on his website's contact page.

Sorry, had been out of pocket at Urodoji pointed out. GS Customs HV is of interest, and I have told the TX based importer to alert me when he gets those in.

I was thinking of simply taking the dimensions of the Sierra 300 gr 338 caliber Match King and enlarging all dimensions by same ratio to where it becomes a 458 caliber.

Nobody out there makes a 458 caliber "match king" or "long range match" bullet right now and with rounds like the Lott and others, I thought it might be something to try. That, and in my 458 SOCOM at subsonic velocities from bolt guns ...

And as Urodoji pointed out, we also are dabbling in .510 caliber so whatever you have available would be of interest

Ok marty

It would have to be a custom made jacket first off
to get it that long Theres no way around it i am doing up right now 300 grain jacketed bullet's in .458
and if i tried to boat tail them well it just would be one strange looking bullet .
Tell ya what i will go down right now and see what can be done .
I have already emailed the jacket maker Butch and i just emailed Richard corbin about getting a boattailer
in .458 you understand this will not happen over night
your looking at 2 month's before i can get a boattailer
in that Diam. if you were looking to boattail a 500 grainer that would be diffrent i could just swap end's and use the point forming die on the back side of the bullet
Just put less of a tapper then the nose( point) on it
Still using the 10% degree tapper
for the boattail .
Did we ever talk about wall thickness's you might like on it ?
.030 ? 050?
These bullet's will cost if i can make them around
20 cent per jacket 10 per lead 15 cent's my labor pre bullet.
So you see it ant cheap.

10 bullet's 4.50 20 bullet 9.00

Ok Back again
This is how it pan's out it's will take a double ended jacket not easy to make .
Then double Point forming or i will have to just buy a
Boattail swage die unless you want to cough up the cost of it .
Here's how it stand's
I did put a boattail on a 300 grain .458 not more then 5 min's ago .But with the swage set i have now i will have to get one more part to finish it out
Unless you would like to try some flat nose boattail's
in .458 i can get the point down fairly small and the boattail's just fine but i can get the point any more then a 1/4 inch in size no smaller unless i get other die's
And that kinda make's boat tailing a bullet pointless
but hay ifyou wantto try them thats fine by me..
PM me and we can talk more ..or just keep posting

Whoops, forgot to check here ...

The 300 gr with a boat tail sounds - like you said - a little strange. As to going out and getting tooling, let's first try and "make do" with what you have and see how those perform, if they give indication that they will work, we can then look at making them "look purdy".

Let me know if you can make a 500 gr BT, with a decent taper. I have a SERIOUS shooter looking to do some T&E of a 458 SOCOM bolt gun, and a heavy, boat tail, match king style bullet would serve his purposes spendidly. And if you can get the price around the $10 per 20 as stated in an earlier post, that would be great

How difficult would it be to rebarrel a rifle already chambered for .308 Win to .458 SOCOM?

Depends somewhat on the rifle, but in general, it is a matter of rebarreling and ensuring proper headspace. How difficult is it to make a 308 into a 7-08? The Savage series is relatively easy due to the way the barrel can be threaded in and out in terms of adjusting headspace. Mauser type as well as Rem 700 are easy enough as most everyone has parts and folks are familiar with them.

We are doing a Mauser 93 and 95 right now, I have a M98, we did a Rem 700 switch barrel, and 2 Rem 700s are being done right now for T&E

I'll Email you pics of the Rem 700 switch barrel.

In .458 i take it you are looking for a FMJed boattail bullet ? or ?

458 caliber
500 gr
FMJ
Nice long tip
Boat tail
Thin jacket (slow speed, so I need thin jacket for expansion)

If you can make them, I have no doubt we can sell them ;o)

No hurry, so just drop me an Email or PM when you have anything ready to show or go. These are going to Texas, not overseas, so shipping will be reasonable enough
