I subscribed to Cure Your Own Gout because I've had problems with accumulation of uric acid in my feet and toes. The cure is drink black cherry juice, eat fresh cherries in season and buy Cherry Fruit Extract Capsules made by ENZYMATIC .I read a testimonial by a user who took a capsule felt a bit better when he awoke and took a few more by the end of the day his gout attack was over. I told a dental tech about my experience because her husband had bad gout attacks,he tried it and she told my wife it worked and reduced his pain.

Go to your doctor and get a prescription for .6 mg colchicine which is a natural plant product. Be aware that this is a poison and should be used with care. It works and has worked for years on gout for most people. It helps the body excrete uric acid. Besides working, it is quite cheap, about $4 for 30 pills at my local Walmart. There are other preventative pills out there that work for some people and not for others, I understand they are fairly expensive but have not tried them. However, if it gets bad enough, you'll try just about anything. Good luck.

Doctor will probably tell you to take 3 initially, one per hour when you have a gout outbreak and then take one a day. This regime may or may not work for you. It doesn't work for me on bad outbreaks. Having used it for quite a while, I can judge how many I need to take when but that takes some experimentation on yourself.

The real way to do it when you have an outbreak, recommended by other doctors and what works for me, is to take one an hour each hour until you throw up or shit like a goose. In my case the diarrhea usually comes first and it will last at least 3 or 4 serious sessions on toilet, you will be cleaned out. Usually this will be between 5 and 8 pills for most people. In my case I now take 6, again, one per hour, and avoid the worst of the diarrhea. Pay attention to how many you take that causes the diarrhea and take one less the next time you have an outbreak. In 24 to 36 hours you will probably have significant relief. It can't hurt to drink water to keep yourself hydrated, both for the gout excretory activities and the diarrhea.

I take colchine prophylactically, about 1 every other day, depending on what I've been eating and drinking, unless I feel a twinge in which case I might take one or two a day for two or three days. CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR. My recommendations are what work for me and are not necessarily those that a physician would prescribe. See what works for you.

Gotogordo,

My older brother has gout... or rather it has him. Seems like everything good gives him an attack.

He takes the stuff you described and says it causes a day of P-T-D. (Probably Terminal Diarrhea)

I laughed up a kidney the first time I heard that.

Big-Ed:

PTD----That's funny, but it's funnier if you're not the victim...... clap

Almost everyone's gout is different, it doesn't have to be confined to the toe joints or even the feet. But I think what some people are calling gout is a mild case......when I say I've got a case of gout, I don't move around without crutches, it is agonizing. I've been taking colchicine for almost two years now and as long as I pay attention it stops the attacks. The only time you get the diarrhea is when you have to take a bunch of pills after you've got an attack.

Anti-inflammatories (nsaids) as mentioned above, help, but you've got to somehow excrete those uric acid needles out of the joints before you're good to go.

I got it by overdosing on protein bars. You know how the damned things cost about $2.50 each? The grocery store had 'em on sale for a buck. Well, I OD'ed on 'em for over a month at that price. Four, five, six a day. Protein is good, right? More protein is double good, double right? Well, I went to bed one night with a slight pain in my knees. I woke up the next day with pain that felt like a truck had run over them. It felt like I had a few pounds of crushed glass under my kneecaps. As the day wore on, the pain became almost unbearable. I won't go into it, but I managed to crawl (literally) across the parking lot of a hospital that night, got some treatment and in a few days I was OK. I took a week off work because I had an excuse and wanted the time off, anyway. Now, the sight of a protein bar makes me run away like a scared kid from the horror house at the carnival. I will never forget such pain. I tell people not to eat them because of what I experienced. Please take my story and be aware...

Now that sounds like the gout I know. Excruciating.

I woke up one Sunday morning wondering what in the hell had happened to my big toe.I could barely stand to even touch it.Luckily ,I was doing CAD (desk job )at the time ,and didnt have to walk much.It took three days to convince myself I needed a doctor.I had gone grocery shopping with the family on saturday, and they had shrimp samples all over the store.I only had a few,not really very many, maybe 4 or 5,but it was enough.

I have colchicine, allopurinol& prednsone and had to have surgery to remove a large lump of uric acid from my right big toe.The best results have been with fresh cherries, black cherry juice and the enzymatic cherry extract capsules(each capsule is equal to 2 glasses of cherry juice) there are no side effects .I've cut way down on purine loaded food & limit meat intake.

There is no such thing as a mild attack of gout. Gout makes childbirth look like passing a loose stool.

I first had it as a healthy 36 year old. Coincidently I was on a hunting trip at the time and the PH trod on my gouty toe. I nearly shot him right there, just for shit and giggles.

My gout is caused by too much steak and kidney. When it rears it's head I eat a pack of idomethacin. Works every time.

Why not avoid the cause and avoid the pain?

I've had it since I was 16 and contrarty to the idea that it's all about what you eat it doesn't seem to matter with me what I eat (or dirink). The indomethecin (sp) works but plays hell with my guts. One real perventative is to drink tons of water and don't ever get badly dehyderated. If you do get dehydrated stay away from the booze until you get rehydrated. I never travel anywhere without the pills and I keep crutches in the closet just in case.

I've heard of gout "salts" that are available in Cypress and I've been trying to find some...anybody have any experience with these?
