Aspen Hill AdventuresLOL, only via the television. I think it would be an interesting adventure though. Especially if you could see the penguins, sea lions, killer whales, etc. Not sure tour groups would take you to see such things?

Grizzly Adams1My neighbors went on an "Antarctica" cruise, just before covid. They spent a couple of days at the most northern peninsula of the continent, below South America and raved about it. Seals, orcas and Penguins, they were happy and could claim to have visited all 6 continents. I'd expect to freeze a little at least, kind of like looking at a naked woman and not getting to play with her
Actually, they boarded in Valparaiso and ended up in Rio, by way of the Falklands. It wasn't a cheap trip.

There are a number of cruises that go to the Antarctic. You can leave from southern Chile or southern Argentina. I think they only go for a short period in January and February. I plan to go because that is the only continent I have not visited. If anyone has gone, I would like to hear recommendations of specific cruises.

NormanConquestA few years ago I had an old friend who was born in 1913 + was getting pretty sedentary. I gave him all of my old copies of National Geographic. He would call me every few days to chat + always asked if I knew where he went today. It was always, 1st I went to China, then I went down the Amazon, then I went to the pyramids, then Antarctica, etc. I've always felt good about that.

FrostbitJust looking for any "boots on the ground" experience. Joyce and I booked for 2023. It's an extended 21 day trip Departing from Ushuaia (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina) with visits to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula.
We have a friend who is a retired ER Physician that worked as ship's Doctor intermittently for an adventure cruise outfit and had been to Antartica twice. His advice was to definitely make sure the itinerary included South Georgia.
The down side of his recommendation was that a trip of that length puts you at the mercy of the Drake Passage for much longer lengths of time.
He was in 40 foot seas on a 90 meter ship (same size we booked) and said over 3/4 of the passengers suffered dreadful bouts of sea sickness.
Joyce and I have been in some pretty treacherous waters before and seem to have iron clad inner ears ------- no sickness.
Looking forward to this.
It's the same booking outfit we used for a once in a lifetime Galapagos trip just before COVID shut the islands down.
Cultural and Natural Heritage ToursI love reading old books about Antarctica.
Mawson’s Will is one of my favorite!

theback40I had a army buddy do 6 months as a maintenance man at one of the multi country research operations. He said 6 months was all he could do as he had so much sex he thought his dick would wear out. New meat is highly sought after with the long term females there!

shanksponyIf you are heading to Antarctica, and South Georgia, then have a read up on the Shackleton expedition. A good book is Endurance, by Alfred Lansing. The bit about their journey from Elephant island too the whaling base on South Georgia is mind blowing.

NormanConquestMy ex-wife had an uncle in the navy that was stationed down there for 6 months at a weather station with nothing to read but a dictionary. NEVER play trivial pursuit with that guy. He would clean everyone's clock.
