O.K. I have been meaning to do this for some time as I have the greatest respect for whom I consider the greatest statesman + wit of the past century. Please contribute. I will start out. On concerning Adolf Hitler, "He was a teetotaler, vegetarian, nonsmoker. Maybe one or possibly two of those afflictions might be acceptable but he had all three." Never mistake motion for action.

my favorite is this one: "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." NRA Benefactor. Life is tough... It's even tougher when you're stupid... John Wayne

Supposedly, the following exchange took place between Churchill and a female Member of Parliament named Bessie Braddock. Bessie Braddock MP: “Winston, you are drunk, and what’s more you are disgustingly drunk.” WSC: "Bessie, my dear, you are ugly, and what’s more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly." "In wartime, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies." One you don't hear much, but still rings true today.

Something about standing in a bucket and trying to pull yourself up by the handles, but can't say it nearly as well as he did. Or was that Will Rodgers? Anyway, the quote seems particularly appropriate these days.

Thanks for sharing that link, now maybe more can be involved. Mine are either from books or memory. He was a very intelligent man that filled his lifetime. I doubt we'll see another. Never mistake motion for action.

Thanks as well. His comments about successes and failures are especially telling to me. He had his share of both. At Omdurman, with the 21st Lancers, he was involved in the charge that resulted in the most VC's in any single engagement in the history of the British Army, although Churchill himself was not awarded the VC. That whole campaign that culminated in that battle is an incredible story that anyone interested in African history would find fascinating. As soon as you read about that, you'll want to learn about Charles Gordon and siege of Khartoum that prompted it, but as Churchill recommended, I love to read and learn from the experiences of others. Saves a few of your own bruises. Then, he had Gallipoli and no ordinary man could have come back from that. But he did and became PM and led England out of the most dire challenge to its existence in modern history. He said it was hard for a man to be both great and good, but somehow I think he was that man.

True, Gallipoli was a very black mark against him + cause for his dismissal from the Admiralty. I recommend the new biography by Hillary Mantell concerning his exploits during the Boer war. Also fascinating is his own book "Frontiers + Wars". Never mistake motion for action.
