What is the place to buy boudin - I am headed to Tx (driving thru la on i-10) for some axis hunting next week and want to load up on boudin on the way back.

Thanks,

Mike

The closer you get to the La. border, the better you chances. If you're coming down 10 you'll be in Houston + its not that far.Besides in Houston there are lots of good cajun suppliers. Hell,I'm in Austin + a friend of mine,Curtis Clark owns Evangaline Cafe, totally cajun. You can't tell you're not on the bayou. You'll have opportunity.

Never mistake motion for action.

Best Stop or Don's, Scott,LA, both located off the same exit on I-10. Try them both. Can't go wrong either way. Outstanding cracklins too, especially at Best Stop. And don't forget the sweet dough blackberry pies.

Nunu's in Youngsville. My favorite and I live in the area. About 20 minutes off 10.

Don's is not bad either.

I bow to local knowledge but Scott's is officially the Boudin Capital of the World and here is my relevant post from April: (at least 6 different boudin places in Scott)

I had to make a run over to E Louisiana to pick up a canoe I bought. It was located about 40 mi or so East of Baton Rouge. Not to waste a long trip, I planned on turning it into a Q expedition and to try some of the various boudin (a pork and rice along with spices sausage that is absolutely wonderful when it is right, the commercial efforts towards making a good boudin that I've had in NE and Central Texas have been considerably less than wonderful) joints in Scott, La. The newest "best boudin" spot. From a net review of Scott's boudin shops:

quote:
On April 12, 2012, Scott, Louisiana was designated by the State Legislature of Louisiana as the "Boudin Capital of the World." This was no small feat and it meant that Broussard, Louisiana needed to relinquish the title [Broussard is now known as the "former Boudin Capital of the World"] and that Jennings, Louisiana's title of "Boudin Capital of the Universe," while seemingly more prestigious, would take a back seat to the boudininalia in Scott. The city of Scott's claim to the title is substantial, with more boudin purveyors per-capita than any other place in the state and a couple of the more prominent boudin makers (Don's Specialty Meats and Best Stop) to boot, no other city in Louisiana (and thereby the world!) produces more links than Scott.

I-10 runs right thru Scott, about 10 mi W of Lafayette, and well worth the stop for boudin if you have the time. As they say in Louisiana, "So good, it will make you slap your mama." I tried 3 of the 6 or so "famous" makers in Scott. All were either great or better if you like boudin. FWIW, I think I preferred Best Supermarkets, closely followed by Billy's Boudin, closely followed by Early's Supermarket. I bought about 20 pounds or so home with me, along with some Andouille sausage, and other local products. Let me tell you, those Cajuns have forgotten more about cooking than any other group in the country ever knew. They could make an old boot taste wonderful. I will flatly state that there is not a piece of sausage made at any of the well known Q joints in Texas that is ANYWHERE EVEN close to how delicious a piece of good boudin is, and boudin is substanstially cheaper, running about $3.60-$4.75/lb at the makers joints.

BTW several if not all of the places have frozen boudin, which is what I'd buy if I was planning on taking it home and parsing it out BUT, like most frozen stuff, it loses something. Still good, but not like freshly cooked.

Try the Jack Pepper Boudin Balls at Billy's.

Boudin is like gumbo and BBQ, different people like different things. There is some fine boudin in Scott, exit 97 btw. At one time Best Stop had the best cracklins around, it has been a while since I ate any from there.

Billy's Boudin located in Scott was in the news earlier this year for the wrong reasons. It seems as though the government frowns upon cheating employees out of overtime pay.

Don's is plenty good. I doubt I would drive an extra 40 minutes for Nunu's. However my salesman brings Nunu's boudin all over South LA and in to Texas and the overwhelming consensus is that boudin is better than they can get in their locale.

Good luck on the hunt for both axis and boudin.

Interesting post, Gato. Jennings is my hometown. Mr. Ellis Cormier was the Boudin King. I loved it when I was a kid. I remember he sold his boudin from the meat counter of his mom-and-pop grocery store when I was kid, but as he became better-known and more prosperous he converted the whole store into a restaurant for his boudin. Cormier has been dead for years. The Boudin King restaurant is still there but today the boudin is mostly rice. I had some this past week, it was nostalgic, but the boudin from Scott has a lot more meat in it. I don't eat much boudin any more up here in north Mississippi but I'm good with either one.

Fried boudin stuffed with pepper jack cheese. Not too healthy but man it is good.

Hunt was great

The boudin I had for lunch

The plan to stock up on the way back did not turn out as planned as I went thru Cajun country at 12 am driving axis meat back to Florida. Need another road trip.
