As a lawyer, I'm constantly getting information from the State Bar about the level of both substance abuse and mental health issues that are so prevalent in the profession. Much higher than average. Not surprising really given the realities of the practice of law.

We now have a mandatory 1 hour of CLE on substance abuse that has been added to our yearly CLE requirements. But it also covers mental health issues, depression, anger management, etc. etc.

From advice from Eisenhower’s mother

“He that conquereth his own soul is greater than he who taketh a city,”

One simple mistake or act in anger can destroy multiple lives.

The older I get the more likely I am just able to let things that irritate me run off and just move on. Life is too short.

Where in the link did you guys read anything about substance abuse? And I had no idea being corporate counsel for a software company was so stressful. Live and learn......

Jdollar,

Noone said anything about substance abuse, but anyone who runs someone over and kills them for denting their car has issues of one kind or another.

Another kinda related bit of info here for those that are not aware. But this is REAL! You can be arrested + incarcerated for taking your or anyone's meds from the pharmacy to your destination. I thought that was B.S. when I heard it but then asked several cops (while not carrying any meds) + I got a Universal you bet. The way around this is to get your meds mailed to you. What a crock.

lavaca: I practice law in Nevada-Las Vegas to be specific.

Back to Saeed's observation about lawyers and mental sickness-Thus the current need to obtain one hour of mandatory Continuing Legal Education for Nevada lawyers in the area of substance abuse, mental health, etc. etc. etc., in addition to all other CLE hours required by the State Bar of Nevada. Big Grin
jdollar:Yep, you're right that no substance abuse was mentioned in the article, but be it substance abuse, mental health or anger issues, etc., it's all being carefully looked at now by State Bar Associations because these issues have become epidemic with lawyers. Or, maybe it's just being publicly recognized more today. Either way. . . . .
Time was, in my law school experience from 37-40 years ago, where a wine and cheese function or even a kegger, was the norm, and for those who did not drink-nothing was offered as an alternative. You were taught that such functions were expected as the norm-drinking and all. Not so at many law schools now. Some have even discouraged the alcohol functions as being akin to supporting habits that lead to negative outcomes in the lives of many lawyers.

Problem is, in most instances they have already reached that level of dishonesty as they were lawyers in the first place. Look at how many lawyers are politicians! dancing

It all depends on who the lawyer is representing.

If he/she is representing the other side's position then he/she is an idiot. However, if he/she is representing your position then he/she is brilliant.

I have always thought of lawyers sort of like prostitutes. They will work for whoever pays them and have no scruples.

Along the same lines that is a profession that gets paid before doing any work. Nice work if you can get it. I end up waiting up to 90 days to get paid for work that is completed.

Noone ever likes a lawyer until you need one. And I've turned down plenty of cases and been fired off of plenty of cases over positions I wasn't willing to take. Goes with the territory.

With apologies to Lavaca and Use Enough Gun, the difference is that a prostitute quits screwing you when you die.

I agree Lavaca (+UEG). The lawyers have ALWAYS got a bad rap because they make SOMEONE pay their money, be it attorneys +/or courts. And NO ONE likes that. It is compounded when it is unjustified, thus major resentment. + I'm here to tell you that in Williamson County the courthouse graft runs deep + everybody is getting a slice. or at least the upper echelon.

You know this reminds me of an old correlation similarly placed, in regards to the south + north via pre + post antebellum. Concerning the blacks. I.E. The Yankees loved them as a race but hated the ones they knew. The southerners hated them as a race but loved the ones they knew. I know that the hatred part is a little strong but I think you get the point. So truly IMO the real hypocrites were the Yankees. but everyone is still allowed their opinions.
