This is an interesting paper written by a retired USMC General. Nice inside info on accuracy and effect. I like the observations about the LST captain who got frustrated and drove his ship right up on the beach through the beach defenses. Then used his weapons to destroy German emplacements while debarking his load of troops and equipment. It pretty much proved the LST's were less vunerable to obstacles than thought. His efforts inspired other Captains to do the same thing. The old story about the destroyer captains nearly beaching their ships to provide fire support is also discussed. https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/ADA051873.pdf | ||

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest shore based artillery is always more effective than a tin can floating on water.
