This may be a good sticky for this page.

When one receives an FFL from someone or a dealer they can verify that it is valid by going to

https://www.atfonline.gov/fflezcheck/

BATF has had cases where unscrupulous people change the address on the FFL so the firearms go straight to them without any background check.

For a little guy in the gun trading world I have mailed firearms everywhere.

Do people really mail these things without calling and talking to the FFL in person?

Another good idea is small town local sheriff offices are usually happy to run serial numbers to check and see if guns are stolen.

It's all online now. I let my license go when Clinton got in.The FFL is use now is listed on line. One can look up anyones FFL status w/o needing a hard copy mailed. This is not legal advice, only what works for me.

For over 25 years I had a great relationship with the ATF. The local agents were always polite, professional and very easy to talk with. That all changed last year. The new inspector came out and was just a jerk. I had no issues but he was terrible to deal with.

Got noticed this past week that he wanted to inspect this coming week. I said fine but you won't find any records. I am putting them in a box with my license and mailing them to the repository. Go bother someone else.

Knee jerk reaction, yes. Do I feel better, yes.

Dave for your sake I hope you mailed your 4473's + bound book certified.(After making copies of your bound book entries.)What happened to me was as follows.Clinton came in changed all the rules + put harassment in force as I said earlier.I contacted ATF + (foolishly) asked if I needed to sent this big box of 4473's certified. No,she said,we get them all the time.I did make xerox copies of all the pages in my bound book however. This was on April 1st. In the middle of December I get a letter dated 11/24 from the ATF that I have been dealing W/O a license;looking at 10 years + $100,000.00 fine,ad nauseum.30 days to comply from the date of their letter.Any questions call this 1 800#.I tried for days;finally tried at 11:00 at night.Guess what? It was an all night trucking tire center. The woman says immediately "You want the ATF don't you?" Seems dealers all over the nation had been given that # + the ultimatum.Totally destroyed their business. So now I call the ATF direct + tell them that they already have all my forms but I HAVE COPIES OF MY BOUND BOOK,will that suffice? Sure she says. This time I WILL send it certified. Now it is December 22nd + it needs to be in their hands on the 24th.Don't suppose they thought about the Christmas mail rush of course.Lady at the P.O. tells me there is no way this parcel can get there by the 24th.We go back + forth until she finally says,"Well we can do it but it will cost you $9.00." CHRIST! just do it,then she looks at the address + says,"There is no mail delivery to this Arlington address,it has to be hand carried from D.C." JUST DO IT! Now there is a chance of another Clinton even worse than the last;I am concerned.

There was a big push by so called stocking dealers to do away with small FFLs also many distributors pushed hard to do away with them also.

It was convenient to have one until the all the BS started.

I did. What you described was the first thought that came to my mind. I don't trust the government or any of its agencies.

While I admit my reaction was knee jerk, I was also just tired. I can still do my personal projects so I am happy.

All Clinton's fault??!! The price for an FFL went up LONG before Clinton became POTUS. That is when I quit owning an FFL. I never had any problems with the BATF either. Checking an FFL is fine, BUT, you still need the copy of the FFL itself as the shipping address for firearms may be different from the "doing business" address.

Wrong. Before Clinton, it was $10/year and under him it went to $200/3 years.

quote:
Laws passed under the Clinton Administration such as the Brady Law changed the licensing procedures for FFLs by increasing the fee from $10 per year to $200 for three years and the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 required FFLs to submit photographs
and fingerprints as part of their application as well as to certify that their business complied
with all state and local laws, including zoning regulations. Due to these efforts, the number of
FFLs dropped from over 282,000 in 1993 to fewer than 104,000 by 1999.

And no, you don't need a copy of the FFL, you just need the FFL number which, using the ATF EZ check, will give you the mailing and premises addresses, which would normally be the same.

Yes Sir-
they show up without paperwork or phone calls /emails on a fairly regular basis-
not just from individuals, but from C&R holders and FFL holders-

We even make a few C&R guys angry on a regular basis requesting not only a copy of their C&R license
but also a copy of their State Issued Photo ID-

Reason-- we cannot verify C&R's in any manner-
the Photo ID is our back-up plan for logging in the items received from a C&R

The point being the same;if the left gets into office then all gun rights go out the window. Although I must admit that WAY TOO MANY people are talking civil war if they have their way.I think that everyone should let a sleeping dog lie.

BUT NOT ALWAYS, just as I said in my post. I know because my FFL just shipped one of my guns under those circumstances. I had my FFL in the 1970's and gave it up in the early 80's. Sorry I can't remember the cost but it did go up significantly enough to cause me to not renew. I also relocated which may have complicated the issue.
Peter.
