Can anyone offer a possible incentive to stop medicaid babies? 50% of births!!!! How is that sustainable!!!!! Indigent folks are positively reinforced, incentivized, etc. to have children that they can't afford by virtue of knowing full well EVERYTHING will be paid for. Am I wrong?

It's deeper than just the baby. The girl get pregnant and tells the health dept that she doesn't know who the father is. She gets food, clothing, housing, and money during her pregnancy and afterwards. Living in the DHS provided housing with her, is her "companion" who may be working a good job. I believe when a woman has the second welfare paid for child, she should be fixec. And if the father can be determined, he should be fixed also. I also believe that people on welfare should not be allowed to vote. Aim for the exit hole

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/803426_2 Cost of child birth are $30k to $50k. Average us balance sheet is sub 100k http://www.cnbc.com/2016/09/12...-for-retirement.html Adjust for households at child bearing age - few families could afford to have children. https://www.babycenter.com/101...he-world_10386674.bc Mike

Child birth is interesting cause if you expect households to save and build balance sheets to pay for child birth then the female might get too old or more correctly be beyond optimal child bearing age. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/0...-mortality.html?_r=0 Us is having increase child bearing mortality partially cause older women are having children. Elsewhere it is general health of a society and specific cohorts (African American women) All this shows the costs of healthcare are much more complex than nearly anything else in society. Mike

So what sector of your population do you want to grow.....that which can support itself or that which can't? I think the last time white, college educated males were having the most kids as a demographic in the USA was the 1960s. Then LBJ fucked everything up.

You really don't want to know my opinion as it is very politically incorrect. I want massive skilled immigration - let other countries bear cost of creating a educated skilled work force and us absorb it at college/graduate level. Unskilled guest worker program with Mexico and Central America. Population growth in us native becomes kind of irrelevant as long as it is between 1.8-2 children per women. Figuring out how to pay for healthcare for us native is the tough part. Immigrants can be subject to employer healthcare requirements. Mike

Obamacare repeal failed. The questions now are how long can obamacare be kept alive, if obama care slowly dies who steps in and when does the rise in healthcare costs get some form of control. Healthcare needs to be addressed - both parties, both houses, executive, administrative state, insurance companies - all need to come together and bash this out. But I will bet it gets kicked down and slowly price controls and rationing are imposed by the administrative state via CMS. Mike

Mike, I am afraid you are right. The whole system will implode to the point where we are stuck with single payor of some sort. Once the health insurance system is gone healthcare rationing of one sort or another will begin. Tom

One of the problems is that everyone seems to focus on insurance. Insurance is nothing more than a financing mechanism for paying for healthcare costs. Pound away at the health insurers until the end of time and we will never get anywhere because it does not address the issues of the extraordinarily high costs of healthcare in this country. There are abuses on so many levels. Let me give you a couple of examples. First, let me disclose that my wife is a surgeon. I occasionally get gout in my right foot. The podiatrist prescribes something called Duexis. It works. To make a long story short, by chance, I found out it costs $2,400 per month. I mention this to my wife. She can't believe it. She looks it up. She has steam coming out of her ears. She tells me to stop at Walgreens. She comes back with a bag with some OTC items and tells me to take this instead. Of course, I inquire. It is the EXACT same thing bought over the counter for LESS THAN $20 PER MONTH. The only difference is that I take 4 pills rather than 1. Abuse? Hell yes! I have a friend who went to the emergency room for some issue. They wanted to do pregnancy test. she said, " I am 58." Their response was that it was standard procedure. Then she sais wait a minute. I had a hysterectomy. The people at the hospital indicated they didn't know that was true or not. My friend then pointed out that she had it at that very hospital! They repeated the standard procedure line again. Total BS but it costs. My 84 year mother has a host of orthopedic problems. My wife listens and some of it doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense. We get the medical records. She reviews them. Some of the treating doctors are either total idiots or they are just milking the system. This is why things cost so much. Obamacare was designed to fail. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of insurance could have told you that. Most can't afford to get sick under Obamacare. They can't afford the deductible and the out of pocket maximums.

Nailed it larry. The whole argument is on insurance - the financing mechanism - not the item being financed - healthcare and healthcare cost. If healthcare cost rise at 'more than inflation or real GDP growth. Healthcare becomes a bigger and bigger part of the economy. Governments, corporations, small business and consumers will have to eventually address he issue of health care costs eating into everything. Mike

The three words that get to the heart of it are; "milking the system". The Medicare system gets milked as well. As individuals we are just part of someone's revenue stream. "Free" knee and back braces advertised on TV. "Free" CPAP supplies. "Free" isn't free. I stay pissed-off at BlueCrossBlueShield of Texas. A monopoly determined to figure out how to separate you from as much of your money as possible. Step #1 - 2003 / 2012 - BCBS of Texas covers my wife for a pre-existing condition through my benefits package. Step #2 - 2012 - BCBS of Texas charges double for the same coverage under COBRA. Step #3 - 2013 - BCBS of Texas charges 50% more for the same coverage after COBRA runs out. Step #4 - 2014 - BCBS of Texas charges 20% more after claiming they won't be providing THAT medical plan in the coming year, but have a similar plan for the new year. Step #5 - 2015 - BCBS of Texas repeats Step #4 Step #6 - 2016 - Wife qualifies for Medicare. BCBS of Texas milked it as long as they could.

I hear what you are saying. If this guy made nothing it wouldn't change anything. While it is a hell of a lot of money, it is a drop in the bucket of total healthcare costs. I am willing to bet a good portion of that is paper money as in stock awards where they aren't really writing a check. To me a bigger problem is when you have people like drug reps, ortho device reps, etc who make more than the doctors. Trust me it happens a lot.
