I don't own one but... My local hardware store sells them. They had a demo day and it seem well built and easy to controled temps. They were smoking on one and used another for grilling. I forget the cost of the pellets but it seem reasonable.

I have owned one for several years. Just gave it away this year and up graded to a MAK pellet grill. The traeger was food, the MAK is unbelievable. If you go with a pellet grill/smoker you will never go back to gas. It takes maybe 10 minutes longer to heat up than a gas grill, maybe, at least 5 minutes. I do everything on them. From pizza, cookies, pies, to burgers, bbq chk, to pork butts and even long cook briskets. Different flavor pellets for different meats and baked goods. Not sure of your budget, but rather than a traeger I would look at green mountain Daniel boone. Pellethead.com has some good info. Welcome to your next hobby

Thanks for the info guys.

I bought one at Costco for a good price. It was a demo model assembled and all.

I now have a gas grill from lowes, a weber, a lodge charcoal hibachi and now a treager.

I am looking forward to going a cookout to test them all out at once

The traeger turned out to be a piece of crap - would not even light up. The store demo model is headed back to costco tomorrow.

I am going to look into the MAK - does it come assembled? Did you buy it directly from them or from a dealer ?

I am going to make the most of a crappy treager and upgrade to a Mak.

Mike,
I bought my traeger 2 star from a local dealer, but i believe it was the same price as on line. Big poppa smokers gives good service. I paid $2300. For mine, it was last years model. Blazn grill works also makes a good grill, i believe they are around 1700.
Even with the extra cost i believe i made the right choice. I had to put it together, took about 2 beers of time. The product was amazingly well packed and all pre drilled bolt holes lined up perfectly. Definitely not made in China!! I do alot of slow cooks like brisket, pork shoulders or whole hams. With the MAK i can set the temp on a brisket at say 180 until meat probe reads internal temp of 160, and then it will automatically go to next set oven temp, in this case 200, until meat probe temp reads 185. Then temp goes up to 225 until internal temps read 205, and then hold that temp for 2 hours. Their pellet boss is the only in that gave me that kind of control. Call out and talk to them, i have had great experiences calling them just to ask questions.
