As Texans adjust to the increased volume of back-to-school traffic, the website Smartasset.com has come out with a new study that puts Texas and New Mexico at a tie for having the fifth worst drivers in the country. Mississippi ranks as having the worst drivers, followed by Tennessee, then California and Missouri at a tie. As part of its justification for the ranking, the study says that Texas "googles the term 'speeding ticket' at the ninth-highest rate" and has a higher-than-average fatality rate per 100 million drivers.

We have an influx of easterners who never learned to drive properly on freeways (if you miss an exit ramp you don't panic, wait for the next one and turn around).
And old farts who can't either see good or turn their heads to look behind before changing lanes. And young women who drive more aggressively than their boyfriends.

The things I have noticed in the past 20 years as far as changing driving habits are concerned, drivers in general are simply more aggressive and vehicles simply have more power so they get up to speed faster from a standing stop.

Road surfaces in most places have gotten better and speed limits in many areas have been raised to limits that are probably more than the skills of the drivers using them.

Throw in people simply being in more of a hurry to get places and it all turns into a cluster.

Probably a lot more uninsured motorists here. Smiler

I won't complain too much about drivers here in southern NM after driving in Houston. I am appalled at the number of drivers I see texting or Googling or whatever the hell they're doing instead of focusing on the road. I can't believe more of us aren't killed everyday by inattentive "drivers" screwing around on their damn phones.

As I believe, the uninsured motorist clause is an additional fee that YOU can pay to cover possible damages from those who choose not to buy it.That in itself is illegal but anything gos right?I have too many horror stories to relate here about this travesty of unequal activities concerning the "mandatory" issuance of insurance. Before I get off of my soap box,a very real pet peeve of mine is the mandatory issuance of insurance for every vehicle you own. This is in effect + will stay in effect as long as the insurance companies have the lobbyists in their pocket. You can not drive but one vehicle at a time. Arizona had (maybe still does)a policy where you were insured as the driver, period.Did'nt matter how many you owned or whose you drove;as a good driver you got a good rate.Insurance for EVERY car? That is so transparent.

CA has so many bad drivers because it has so many illegals who cross the border from a small village in Mexico, pool his money with others, and buys a beater car from a private seller and hits the road. If you buy from a dealer you have to show proof of insurance. The Central Valley is full of farm workers who don’t have a clue how to drive but they will back 6-8 in an old car and hit the road

It's doubtful that many of those are bought from dealers, and DMV may not know about quite all of the sales.
I have seen occasional accidents where both cars disappear within minutes rather than call the police.

I just spent 6 weeks in Texas (except for a one weekend break) and I bet that I averaged seeing 7-10 red light runners per week in the Corpus Christi area.

When the traffic light turned green I would wait a second or two to see who was running the light before starting across the intersection.

Different cities seem to have different driving habits. In Austin folks will run the yellow light but in Dallas they don't;that's the kind of thing that causes accidents.

Ummm..in Dallas people will run the yellow and often the first seconds of the red. It depends on the time of day and location, with rush hours being the worst.

I had a cajun girlfriend in New Orleans while I was supposedly getting a high education. Gone but not forgotten. Somehow the topic of driving came up and stop lights. Red meant stop, green meant go, and yellow meant hurry. A good policy I adopted thereafter.

There are places in Wyoming where a flashing yellow lets you know that there isn't a lot of yellow left. I like that.

Randle,I was addressing Charlie Helms. No worries.Austin has gone into the feedbucket. Mores the pity. I remember when we were a sweet little big town. Then California + their AH investors destroyed our property value (according to the appraisal district).I fight these people daily just to keep my homestead exemtption as well as working on my ag.When my daughter in law went in to protest 3 years ago they told her (God,I wished she had a tape recorder in her purse),we are increasing your taxes to get people like you out of here so we can turn it into a new Lakeway. Those assholes really believe that its their money to do with as they choose + meanwhile I see them seriously increasing the police force at our expense.Scary shit hee.

Are you guys going to let TomP get away with that crack about, "And old farts who can't either see good or turn their heads to look behind before changing lanes".

Them's fighting words. I look over my shoulder before changing lanes. I don't trust those mirrors, the blind spots, and those nuts from the Moreno Valley CA USA that might be slipping up on me.

Those were hurtful words. I'm having trouble getting over the implications there.

On the other hand I have a friend that has another perspective. When I was bitching about how bad the traffic had become he simply said, well if you're out there too going where you want to go then you're part of the problem.Kinda pissed me off at 1st because Godamnit,I was here 1st!!!then an honest appraisal set in,no you were'nt + everyone wants their own.Well, fxxk em,I may not be able to change it but I don't have to accept + like it.

TomP, I thought by "easterners" you were referring to Indians, Chinese, and the like.

I had a new experience today. I was on a three lane (50 MPH) frontage road to North Dallas Tollway. We were in the middle lane. The exit off NDT has vehicles slowing from 70 MPH to 50 MPH off the exit to our left. The SUV in front of me came to a complete stop in 50 MPH traffic with its left turn signal on (no one in front of him). He wanted to turn left at the light that was about 300 yards ahead of us. I watched traffic in my rear view mirror go nuts behind me trying to avoid us. I laid on the horn. With vehicles coming off the exit into the lane to our left at 50 MPH+, the fool, from a full stop worked his way into that lane of moving traffic, then pulled forward to the light......and he was mad at me for honking at him.

One of our members here who has become a friend + lives locally told me about when he was going down to Cabela's in Buda. 3:00 in the Sunday afternoon,he is rear ended by a mexican doing at least 70 (enough to shear the motor mounts + drop his engine right there.)The mex was 3 Xs over the drunk level,no license,no green card,no insurance,no nothing. So I told Ryan 'I'll bet theY threw him under the jail' e told me ,no since he had no money he was released on personal recognizance.
