The pop could be the cartilage between ribs or intercostal muscle strain. Either of which may take longer to heal than a broken bone.

I am not a doctor, I've just been banged up a lot.

Any hard bang to the ribs takes a lot longer than most any other injury to get over the soreness.

Driving a farm conglomeration machine, I hit a ditch bank and wrapped around the steering wheel. Took months. Another time a ladder kicked out from under me and fell on my folded arm from 6 feet up onto concrete slab. A witness said I bounced two feet in the air. Just knew my ribs were busted, Hour later it was just the small bone in the elbow. Still weeks getting over sore ribs.

Rancher friend got rammed into a fence by a nasty tempered cow. Months with those chest pains and nothing broken,

Good luck with healing sooner.

I took a nasty fall on an outside set of stone stair treads . My feet went out from me , from wet leaves on the stairs. I landed on my back on the stone tread..

Hospital MRI showed no internal bleeding , but 7 compound fractured ribs ..

It took a long time, and very painful.
Had to sleep in a chair, couldn’t lay on my back.. and when I had to cough , it was real bad .

Now I’m real careful on any stairs !!
