Best time to buy (new) for best price? What brand would you recommend? My Dell is nearly dead. Tired of trying to fix it. It's been repaired numerous times. I know the economy is bad right now but looking for deals. ~Ann

I had a Dell desktop for years until 10 years ago when I tried to start up after moving and it was kaput. I went to Walmart and bought a new Gateway processor and used the Dell keyboard and the HP monitor that I had been using with the Dell. Wasn't real spendy and still works good, even though it is windows 8.1 operating system. Dennis Life member NRA

Can't help you on deals on a desktop but I got a good deal on an acer laptop from amazon, it's 4 years old now. $600 before Christmas, $800 after . I tried amazon to find one and gave up. found it from a google search (on amazon no less). My last desktop purchase was an HP tower right from HP. I tossed the keyboard in the box, Kept my Dell full size KB from 2000 kept the monitor from my last Win 7 HP and bought a second. I use it for work (work from home mostly) The win 7 hp still works with the 2000 dell monitor.

My son bought me a new Samsung earlier this year + it is way faster than the old Dell. I have no idea what he paid, but it works great.

Dell is still the best. I use Dell monitors, as I build my own PCs. Depending on what you wish to do, they are available on Amazon from $300 up.

Ann, I presume you need a PC for Internet and word processing and so on. No need to go overboard with a fast CPU and graphic cards which can raise the price. Storage is also not that important, because I recommend you get an external SSD and periodically store your important information on it for safe keeping.

Best Buy has a 'refurbished' web page, worth a look. TomP Our country, right or wrong. When right, to be kept right, when wrong to be put right. Carl Schurz (1829 - 1906)

Ann, if you have a local independant repair person, check with them for deals. I recently picked up a like new refurbished big screen laptop, had all of my software and files transferred, upgraded to Windows 10, plus a warranty for $300.

Saeed, I use an external terabyte drive now for my photos as my current Dell took all I had with it when the hard drive dumped/died last year. I had a new hard drive installed and run Mozilla on this unit but it is often locked up and non functional. I have to constantly re-start it. ~Ann

Get a laptop. My stepson works for AWS. He recommended an ASUS VivoBook. I'm happy with it. Depending on what you want, they are anywhere from $400.00 to $970.00 (Amazon, Best Buy, etc)

one thing about a laptop. DO NOT leave it plugged in all the time.. unless you plan never to go mobile.

Ann, I don't know squat about computers, only in the last few years, learned (kinda) to use one. My middle son, however, who is a whiz + in the industry, has told me that dell is crap + he just bought me a new Samsung. That should say something.

We have people working our office. They either have a Mac or a Dell laptops. Very rarely we have problems with either. But, we buy top models. Macs are Pros and Dells are XPS. I personally use a Dell XPS laptop. Again, the top models with Intel i9 CPUs. No problems whatsoever.

Unless you need a powerhouse PC for video or photography work, I would say get a refurbished PC. I haven't bought a "New" PC since 1998, but I have bought several refurbs since then. You can get a reasonably powerful PC for less than a couple hundred bucks. They are trade-in's from corporate accounts and are wiped clean with the latest version of windows installed. The only thing I ever had to do with any of the refurbs I got, was to add memory. usually less than 40 bucks from memorygiant. and I like Dell's. Lenovo would be next(IBM) then HP. but before you trash yours, have you run any cleanup programs to clean up your hard drive? I would recommend that you run privaZer and clean up your machine first. It's free unless you choose to donate. I've kept machines running for years past their expected life using it. NRA Benefactor. Life is tough... It's even tougher when you're stupid... Frank, I will try out that program. I have to say though, my current machine is 'refurbished'- new hard drive and more memory installed less than 2 years ago. It's still a dog. ~Ann

I prefer desktops as well. I am NOT a fan, but Apple has gotten really good in my opinion. Though they are not cheap, they work really well. You get what you pay for. And, has anyone noticed that Apple doesn't offer (nor does anyone recommend ) an antivirus software program for them? They are harder to "crack" and they are top notch as far as security goes...

LOL. I can't catch a break, eh? I do have laptops that I use in the evening but like a DT for photo processing and other things. I also prefer a normal size key board. Arthritis in my hands... ~Ann

Somehow, in an abstract way, that reminds me of the joke where these two guys were trying to measure the height of a flagpole, + of course their tape never made it to the top + kept folding over. This woman came by + said, "Why don't you just take the mounting bolts loose, lay the flagpole on the ground + then measure it?" The one guy looks at the other + says, "Stupid woman, we want to measure how tall it is, not how long!"

So Ann, Did you run PrivaZer? the 1st time you run it it will take a couple hours, but after that it completes in 15-20 min depending on the size of your drive. NRA Benefactor. Life is tough... It's even tougher when you're stupid... John Wayne
