It needs to sink in.

A local government bought bitcoins, a non traceable currency unit, to pay a ransom to an unknown hacker.

This is just wrong - where is the fbi, secret service, us intelligence agencies.

A buddy notified me that he saw an article where some of the criminal element are now installing replacement devices in the gas pumps where if you pay at the pump, they can access your card info. He said some were found here in Liberty Hill. The worse part is is that they can be purchased online, or so I've been informed.

randy.....you need to start watching tv (fox news) more. this has been going on for a long time everywhere. its called credit card scamming.its why u see the red tape (seal) on the panel of the gas pump. if its broken, you know someone has been inside the control panel. they do it A LOT in and around austin. they arrested 2 scumbags in corpus recently from louisiana that were installing scammers in corpus.

Skimmers have been around along time, especially here in Florida on gas pumps and even some bank ATM's. yet, no one seems to ask:
When do your employees inspect each gas pump? On shift change? If not, why not? Why is it up to the consumer to perform his own "inspection"? How can you tell?

They are there. They are warning people, (like the election supervisors), but they are not allowed to publicize the information, and the election supervisors certainly are not going to tell. This is just sloppy information security, and, employee training. There are NO EXCUSES for this.

Butch, I think that the bad guys encrypted the data. Once this is done, and you have cycled through a few backups, then your backups are also encrypted. It is surprisingly easy to take over a company's servers without their knowing, and then doing whatever you need to to compromise the institution. The ransomware is very inexpensive in dollars (tens or hundreds of thousands) compared with the cost of recovery (millions, plus time) especially when you remember that the ransomware is paid for by the insurance company!
Peter.

Not long ago a town south of me paid over 500k to a scam. Said it was for repairs I think. Nobody knows who sent the money from the city now they are spending money to see who sent the money. Saw it in the paper. Haven't heard anything else in a while about the matter.

Who knows if this is a actual hack or just money being stolen from within. Those in charge should hang.

I understand one of the current scams is the telemarketers selling solar systems. They call me on a daily basis after I have told them numerous times that I'm not interested. Actually, 9 out 10 calls I get are from robocalls +/or telemarketers. The ones that used to REALLY piss me off were the ones that would send a fax at 3 in the morning offering stock options, etc. My phone + fax are the same # + my shop line is at the house as well. They would wake me up trying to sell me something I didn't want + use up my fax ribbon in the process. I went all the way from the phone company to the A.G's office but nobody could do a thing because they were calling from Canada. Finally, the girl at the A.G's office told me, "Look, I never told you this but you have their fax # from their sending. Why don't you just fax them back several sheets of black paper?' I did + it stopped. Made me feel good too.
