Maybe it doesn't happen to others, but I seem to get a steady stream of friend requests from strange younger women in foreign countries, eastern Europe, Algeria, and one today from Ghana. Somehow this young lady seems to have gained 'friend status" in some way not known to me, so we shall see if I get requests to cash foreign banks checks, etc. Anyone else been down this merry path? I am of course certain that is a species of scam involving everything from outright financial fraud and account hacking to lame attempts to find some old coot they could marry for a green card.

Heh, should have anticipated these replies. I removed the fact that I was divorced from my profile some time ago ...
Saeed, I think your take is closest to the truth. I agree Zuckerberg is a threat to the human race. It's just the FB is such an easy way to communicate with friends and family, and post photos. No use whatsoever for Twitter, either.

I have a friend that is not really a conspiracy theorist but close. He says it's odd that the guy who started facebook did so overnight with no money of his own.The CIA could access info that was deliberately given by each member at no effort to them. I do find this a bit hard to swallow;just thought I'd throw it out. It's worth as much as any other comment.

Randy, my understanding is that Zuck is a born asshole with a frightening amount of intelligence, monumental hubris and contempt for just about everyone.

It's a combination of Darwinism and P.T. Barnumism of the digital age..

Old PTBarnum said "there is a sucker born every minute" and that was an understatement! all you need is the right bait at the right time and you got em..

There are lonely guys out there with big egos that fall for this crap all too regularly.. It's very sad when you think of it..

Bill/O

I too get those nubile lasses sending friend requests, I just delete and mark a spam.
Like you mentioned I enjoy communicating with friends and family. I've even become re-acquainted with folk I went to high school with 50 years ago. I get a kick out of seeing how many of them have led successful lives and now have kids and grandkids.
I've joined several closed groups and just like here on AR, I get the chance to interact with folks from all over the world.

ya!

Just an observastion here, but I think what happened to too many folks was/has been the loss of community/neighborhood/family whereby everyone is just sort of set adrift in society and has to find their own way.

It is really surprising how much personal information many folks will reveal if you simply set down and talk to them and pretend to listen.

FB gives these folks the audience they did not have as a child or young adult and others may have or will have, had different experiences, but to me it seems to be concentrated within the 25 to 45 year age group.

Most folks in theirv50's and over seem to be a lot more closed mouthed although I have ran onto exceptions.

I read an article online that may or not be true about this young girl that was putting enough info about herself to allow this one fellow to find her finally at her softball game. Turns out he was a cop,+ he approached her + her parents + told them how easy it was to find her via facebook. True or not,a good wake up call if you have kids.Or even you.
