By commonwealth, I mean any bitter beer manufactured in the UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, or any other country of the former British Empire.

Does anyone know of one or more vendors in the U.S.A. who sells here any one or more of the bitter beers produced there?

If not, how about some American made bitter beer? I can't think of a single one of them off the top of my head, but there must be SOME available.....

Lloyd, get a 6-pack of Pete's Wicked Ale. It will take to 5 to figure out if it's bitter enough, and by the 6th, you won't give a sh*t anyway :-)

Perhaps I'll give that a whirl fairly soon. And, thanks for the name of what I gather is an American bitter beer Jon.

There used to be another one brewed by Northern California something-or-other, but as I can no longer find them on the net, I have to assume they went out of business or got bought-out and renamed.

In the meantime, I found ONE source of genuine Brit bitter beer, and only one brand of that. So I'll see what they want to send me a case or two, though I know the shipping will eat my wallet and not even hiccup.

It's amazing to me how unfree this "free" country has become. In most of the other countries of this world a willing purchaser can have almost any of the brands shipped directly to them from anywhere. They may have to pay duty on it, but at least they can get it.

Here in the U.S. I've talked to a lot of the big importers about this, and they say in many states of the U.S., including AZ, ABC (Alcoholic Beverage Control) forbids shipping any booze into the state's spirits stores which isn't distributed at the wholesale level by the one or two licensed jobbers in that state....which is why local beverage stores can't even special order any...they have to buy (by state law) from the licensed jobbers...of which there are two in AZ.

And those jobbers won't bother to get or stock any that aren't already big sellers. They don't need to because we are already forced to buy whatever they decide to sell.

So most sellers nationwide don't bother to even allow a taste for a really good foreign beer to even start to develop here. It is just one more thing they'd have to stock and the potential profit isn't worth it to their big bottom-line corporations.

And unless one can outspend the liquor controllers/suppliers' lobbyists, that isn't gonna change anytime soon.

Man, what I wouldn't give for a few cases of either Victoria Bitter (Australia) or DoubleBrown bitter (NZ.

For that matter, I'd contribute to a legal fund to just make us all free to buy whatever in the hell kind of booze we want and can afford, from anywhere in the world.
