I recall reading somewhere that 84% of german casualties on the western front in WW2 were caused by allied artillery. and that was without computer directed fire plans or crosslinked computer coordination, when Time-on-target barrages were calculated with slide rules and locations were guessed at without GPS mapping that is accurate to within a few inches (on a good day to within the width of a us quarter dollar coin) AD If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day! Those who manage to provoke themselves into other activities have only themselves to blame. *We Band of 45-70er's* 35 year Life Member of the NRA NRA Life Member since 1984

During the mid 1980s I worked on a project called Quick Fix. This was a set of electronic black boxes and antennae installed on Blackhawk helicopters. It permitted the triangulation of electromagnetic radiation within about a minute for directing artillery or other fire onto a target. There there is counter battery radar which allows artillery on both sides to hunt each other. If your artillery is not mechanized it will probably not live very long.

Maybe once, but portable guided missiles and accurate air strikes have kind of put a dent in that. Russians in WW ll took the principle to the limit, maybe cause they were deficient in air power. The intensity of the barrages on the Easter front, read eastern Germany in the last days of the war, were without a doubt unprecedented. It is not enough, usually 90%. Alas, our favorite rifle in modern warfare, there is little that decide. Yes, "precision shooting" is more literary turn. It is rarely possible to observe a target at a great distance in a comfortable environment, always talking about some degree of probability. Therefore, the number of shells and the tonnage that's the main thing.
