I got home yesterday evening from a haul job. I called my wife and told her to fill the pick-up with gas. The lady was standing there with a bag to put on handle when she finished. went to the store this am(Friday) and still no gas. Went to Kroger and not a loaf of bread on the shelf. I did grab some bottled water on the way home from up north. Have venison in the freezer and propane for the grill. Should make it ok.
Bout forgot, I live less than 200 yards from the salt water. All the oyster boats are docked it looks like.

With trepidation, I just sent my two beloved daughters off to Austin, down I-35, because UT classes start next week. My thoughts are they will beat the heavy rain. I told them to fill up before getting to Austin. I'm closely watching the weather and may modify my advice if it looks worse. Austin does not handle heavy rain well, neither does I35.

Years ago, when gambling got tough, as it always does, I worked crew on a shrimp boat out of Port Isabel for a while.
Shrimp crew are some of the toughest, most fighting bunch I've ever been around. It made for a real adventure to beat them out of money on pool, or gambling. Fortunately my buddy would fight a buzz saw and give it three turns and still win. My boat captain and another local captain didn't care for each other and were stranded in Galveston for a major 'cane Carla. Naturally they were in a bar, one thing lead to another, and they took it outside into the street which was about chest deep in fast flowing water and went to duking it out. Finally one of them had to drag the other back in to keep him from drowning. Didn't make them like each other any more, tho.

So your advice would be NOT to head down I-35 for Austin on Monday planning to stay a week, visit brother in Giddings, daughter in Buda, and play golf on Wednesday.

That hurricane is messing with my retirement plans.

My other brother in Spring said he's in good shape, expects to see JTEX float by about Sunday evening.

Depends on where you are as to whether you are laughing I guess. There are several AR members in Victoria and one AR member in Sinton. I have already gotten a text from the fellow in Sinton that the power is out and they are running their generator. Winds have been upwards of 50 mph in Sinton and 30 mph in Victoria. I just hope the predictions that the storm is going to stick around for 4-5 days turn out wrong. All that rain will mean big problems up and down the Gulf Coast.

The lack of steering winds to move that storm off high-center is proving tragic. I can't imagine 24 inches of rain in 24 hours, with up to 40 more inches possible.

My heart still goes out to those who are safe, but whose homes have been flooded, or soon will be. My folks' house had three feet of water in it during a New Year's flood in 1997, and the mess it left behind was indescribable -- and exhausting to clean up.

I take it to mean that prayer is the last resort, and is being substituted for good preparation. Along the lines of the 5Ps, piss poor planning equals piss poor results.

Not being religious, I find that God and prayer are way over handidcapped. "He survived the wreck while his wife and kids were killed." It was a Miracle!" Well, if it was a miracle, as often happens, many people got left out but God gets the credit anyway. Bus goes off road, 40 killed, young baby survived, "It's a miracle". Yeah, right.

OTOH, when all resources are exhausted, prayer might give one the spirit to keep on keeping on, which is a huge part of surviving tough situations.

As the old saying goes, Can't hurt, might help.

With some it may be indoctrination, with others it might be a crutch and with others it might be hope that they and there loved ones will survive.

I do not know.

I just know that in my time on Earth I learned a few lessons from the misfortunes of others.

That is why:

A. I do not live in a Floodplain!

B. I do not live on or any place real close to a Fault Line.

C. I will visit the coast but I won't live within 200 miles of it, because of Harvey.

D. Even though I do live in Tornado Alley, my best defense is when there is a possibility of a Tornado, I get Lora into the pickup, grab my 3 favorite cats put them in with her, figure out which way the storm is moving and do like a Comanche, get the hell gone in the other direction!

I realized many moons ago, it is better to be digging folks out, than waiting to be dug out!

Prayer, preparation and effort.......luck doesn't hurt either. God have us the ability to think and he have us free will.

My joking is not meant to make light of the situation folks. Joking is for some, a way to clear one head. Just like hurricane parties in Louisiana, takes people's mind, for however briefly, off the impending catastrophe.........

God bless all.

BTW,

my brother Ken Brown's house yesterday morning about 9:30 AM. They lost everything in the house below the second story. They were evacuated by boat in the afternoon and then walked a couple miles to my mother's house, which as of an hour or so ago was still high and dry. We have been getting hammered for the last hour or so and the water has come up about a foot in front of my house. He is near Mary's creek in Friendswood Texas and I'd be willing to be it is above the level of the second floor.

I've got a minor roof leak but I've put a bucket under it.

Wedenesday I prepared and am well provisioned.

I have a generator and 50 gallons of gas (plus a "mexican" credit card (siphon hose), 150 lbs of Ice in my deep freeze. I'm locked an loaded!

And if things get extreme........

My world view is one that believes in the efficacy of prayer.

CAT,

FWIW,

I have to beg to differ with you.

Righteous simply means right-wise with God.

The bible I read sez' in 2nd Peter 2:9......

9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

and where I came to faith!

Romans 10: 9-10

9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

and

Romans 10: 13

13For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

So easy, even a critter such as I could do it! Kinda like walking through a door. One second your on one side, next second you're on the other!

Hebrews 1:1

from the Amplified bible

11 Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses].

IIRC, 40 years ago last July,

I've not regretted it one day since!

Best,

Yup,

but I appreciate your consideration, and a couple of verses I've taken to heart

: 2nd timothy 2: 24-26,

And the Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.

so, no problem. I've shared the gospel. Beyond that is above my pay-grade!

Oh yes,

as a coda!

My high school track/cross country coach used to say

"Brown, your legs are pumpin' up and down mightily, but you sure don't get nowhere mighty fast. I've always been half-fast.

Don't go very fast, but I can go for-ever.

So when it comes to adult beverages, like running, I tend to pace myself.

Best,
