First: I spend a lot of time on AR. Never posted much and at 79 I will not get to do all on the "bucket list" Just asking for thoughts and or your exp. with this sort of thing. Jan 4 I had a serious hart attack and now have 5 stents in my heart vessels. After a while will this limit shooting my big bore stuff? Not wanting med advice just real life knowledge. God has blessed me to still be here so I just want to know how others have gotten on. Thanks chester

I didn't have a heart attack, but a test revealed serious blockage so in 2014 I had quadruple bypass surgery. I really don't hunt anymore except a tower pheasant shoot about once a year, but I do shoot skeet once a week, weather permitting. I only shoot subgauges (410 & 28) but not because of the bypass. I had a detached retina a few years ago and the retina specialist recommended I stay away from heavy recoiling shotguns and rifles. I'd suggest you discuss with your cardiologist what he/she feels you should or shouldn't do--in all aspects of life, not just big bores. I know that for a month or so after my bypass I wasn't allowed to drive a car or even sit in the front seat. Chester, I hope that you have a gun-friendly doctor to give you good REAL advice, not personal opinions. I have never had a heart attack but I have had a detached retina from shooting the big bores (which required surgery) + had a good friend you suffered from a broken neck who was reluctant for quite some time to even shoot his 22-250; understandably. I repeat my opening sentence. Best of luck, my friend. R. Never mistake motion for action.

My mom had stents and bypass at 70. She is now 74. Is she back to her pre heart issues - no. Is she much better than my expectation - Yes. that is what is important. I would talk to doctors about the stress Of large calibers. But there are some awesome 22 and 17 hmr one can shoot with little recoil. Get well and back to living even if you have to make some changes. Mike

Two friends who have had this. And one who has an implanted instrument to fire up his heart if it stops - no idea what it is called. All have been advised against shooting anything larger than a 12 gage shotgun. As far as I know, they shoot 308 Winchesters with no problems.

Thanks for the info and kind words. Saw my new heart doc. today and SHE shoots guns!!! "Give things a few weeks to settle down than there should be no problem shooting anything I now have. I have a 17 several 22s 22-250 on up and will start there and work up as I feel good about the results. May God bless you all.

I would look at suppressors. In a bolt action they make the whole shooting experience much more comfortable. Get well and get shooting. Mike

Don’t listen to him. Suppressors are a abomination! Just like those funny contraptions called Blasers! They were specifically designed for fishermen

Agree. If you have 5 stents, the heavy recoil could move one with possible negative results.
