I have heard many reviews good and bad about the model 770. What is everyone's opinion of the rifle? Would it be a good deal to purchase a model 770 combo package? If so what is preferred caliber for this gun? I can purchase a model 770 combo scope package new in box for under $200, so a deal or not.

You do know there is a reason this rifle is priced so cheap don't you? I don't think I would give that much for one; in fact I think I would turn one down if offered to me for free if I had to drive across town to pick it up.

I would venture to say that most of us here on this site take pride in having guns of quality, not just something that shoots.I understand that not everyone can have a top of the line bolt or dbl.but as you said yourself, save your money for something a little better. That is a decision that you will never regret.
The main reason I consider the Rem model 770 junk is because of their barrel to action being press fit rather than the two pieces being screwed together. I have read of the barrels working loose after firing multiple times. When this happens head space is way out of spec and the gun becomes very dangerous. I don't doubt they can be accurate when new, but I don't consider them a good value at all.

I agree Pdod,to a degree. None of us was born rich (I think);sure we all had to use cheap guns in the beginning. My 1st was a Stevens single shot 410 that the extractor was broken on.When the doves were flying I was busy with my pocketknife trying to extract the shell to get another shot off;cut myself more than once.As I told my eldest son many years ago when in High School that with his nice shirts + pressed jeans that he thought he was "all that",I said if you want to get to Hollywood, you have to come up through southern California".Very few start out on top, those that do I don't think I would trust because they never had to pay any dues.
