American Homebrewers Association Names Top 50 Beers In America; Russian River Wins Again

Zymurgy magazine, the official publication of the American Homebrewers Association, has released its ninth-annual list of the 50 best beers in America. To assemble the list, its editors ask readers to submit lists of their top 20 favorite beers.

Russian River's acclaimed Pliny the Elder beer won the top slot for the third year in a row. But if you want to try it yourself, you might have a hard time. Russian River is fairly widely distributed in California, but the only state in the East Coast where you can get Pliny the Elder is Pennsylvania. (And it's scarce even there.) At least many of the others on the list (like Sierra Nevada) have strong national distribution. The top-ranked brewery, as measured by total votes for its beers, was Delaware's Dogfish Head. The brewery's highest-ranking entrant was the hop-heavy Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA, which tied for third.

Here's this year's full list:

Damn, even if you are a friend, you must be a Yankee.....anyone knows the best beer is a) a free beer or b) someone else's beer. dancing

I've drank quite a few of the locally brewed micro beers and none of them have really blown my skirt up. I spend a fair amount of time and money in Buffalo Wild Wings in Texarkana drinking Sam Adam's Lager (#26) on draught while playing free poker which is kind of like kissing your sister but that's better than kissing your brother.

Personally I like SA Lager slightly better than their Noble Pils (#20) but to each his own. I've only had maybe 20% of the above list, including all of the Sierra Nevadas, so can't really comment on most of them. Shiner Bock, a true Texas product is a very decent beer, but not top tier IMO.

I like most Pale Ales, some more than others. Some take the hops way too far. I've recently started drinking some Heineken for the first time since I was diving in the Caymans 40 years ago and it's a very good commercial beer IMO with a slightly different accent. With the exception of most porters, stouts, Belgium Ales, (personally I don't like drinking dinner but that's just me), hefeweizens, and various weird fruit flavored beers, I like most beers, just some more than others, kind of like girls except the beers don't get prettier the more you drink.
