I will be moving from Illinois to New Hampshire before the end of this year, and am wondering about how I should move my guns. I plan to take my cars and motorcycle on separate trips there, but am worried about taking several guns with me by a U Haul especially after reading the various horror stories on the net. There are 30 rifles and shotguns and 3 handguns, and there might be some new guns by the time I move. No ARs though I have two lowers that I have not yet built into rifles. There are some muzzleloaders as well, but I plan on taking only one with me.

If anyone has any recommendations for a professional service that might do this for a fee, I would appreciate it. Any other suggestion is also welcome. I would be especially grateful for information about services that someone might have used themselves. Thanks in advance, and good hunting!

Build a wooden crate using security screws, then bolt each corner of the the crate to the floor of the U-Haul with lag bolts (U-Haul will never notice the holes).

Place your unloaded guns (in their original boxes or gun cases), magazines, and ammunition inside the crate. Then, screw the crate lid down with more security screws, and throw a tarpaulin over the crate and lash it down.

Do not stop for food, gas, or rest room breaks in New York, New Jersey, or Massachusetts if you can avoid it (Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania are relatively safe for gun-owners).

Gas up in Pennsylvania so you can drive through to NH. If you're vehicle doesn't have the range, buy a spare 5-gallon gas can and fill it up when you stop in PA.

If stopped by the police, DO NOT CONSENT TO ANY SEARCHES OF YOUR VEHICLE, TRAILER, OR PERSON. Nothing good will come of it.

Do not answer any questions beyond those necessary to identify yourself. Nothing good will come of it.

Do not admit to the presence of firearms, ammunition, or accessories. Nothing good will come of it.

The crate ensures that the police cannot spot the firearms, ammunition, or accessories even if they glance inside the trailer.

Or you could ship the pistols from one FFL holder to one in NH to be strictly legal. Otherwise George is spot on.

Good plan - with just a few caveats, if I may:

1. Make doubly sure all firearms are unloaded.

2. Put a hasp and a padlock on the crate. I know it's screwed shut, but put a hasp and a padlock on it anyway.

3. Do not place the ammunition in the same crate with the firearms.

4. Place the ammunition in a separate, locked container.

Pretty crazy, but better safe than sorry. NH is God's country. Live free or die!

Let's see ...

When I moved from Carson City, NV to Las Vegas, I parked my gunsafe in the back of a 6x9 open trailer. Guns inside and fully bubble wrapped. I had trouble moving the safe (V. heavy), so I enlisted the help of my down-the-street neighbor after he got off his shift at the Sherif's Dept. I drove down Hwy 95 for 400 miles, stoping where I pleased. saw a few, - hey, it's empty Nevada - NHP cars coming and going. For some reason they neither stopped me, threw me to the ground, handcuffed me, nor even showed any interest.

I now live in community surrounded by Metro police, firemen, man who builds munitions for General Atomics, etc. We spend a lot of time talking guns and hunting.

Why any gun owner would live in an east coast state that hates guns is beyond me.

poprivit,

New Hampshire is still strongly pro-gun politically. Instead of living in anti-gun environment, he will just be surrounded by them (except for Maine). Big Grin

The good news is you can easy drive from PA to NH in a day. Take federal highways only. You are traveling thru states with no second amendment rights.

I don't think NJ now makes any exceptions for travelling through. They apparently expect everything to be registered with them. I'd REALLY avoid that state. And what their laws say and what they do aren't the same thing.

Even Canada might be better, excepting the handguns. They dumped their long gun registration.

Thank you, gentlemen, for the very helpful suggestions. I was worried about the move and especially about having to transport my guns when I move. I now know how to plan the trip. I shall get a feel of the route when I take my cars and motorcycle to Salem. That should help me plan the U Haul trip as well. I plan to just load my motorcycle into the U Haul when I take the guns, books and some antique furniture and clothes across. I was hoping to freight the guns there and avoid having to drive with them myself, but it does look like that may not be an option.

Thank you again, everyone. I am really grateful for your replies and guidance. Good hunting!

Mehul,

Many freight companies are not willing to assume the financial and legal liability to move firearms.

Crate them up and drive them to Salem. Do not stop in NY, NJ, CT, or MA.

And stay five miles per hour UNDER the legal speed limit in the Lib-Commie states. Stick to the interstate, avoid secondary roads, toll roads and towns and stay in your vehicle no matter what...and take something you can eat while driving and a milk carton to pee in. And keep thinking how it's gonna be to breath free air.

Do the speed limit. Five under and you will get into an accident. Toll roads will be almost impossible to avoid. Also do not take 95 into the NYC. Get on 287 to 87 maybe. Not sure in if you are using 80rt to come east.

You know the area. That sounds like better advice.

And it can get you noticed. Highway cops are suspicious of cars driving slowly on the interstates. They also profile certain types of vehicles.

My apologies for the late reply. Thank you, gentlemen. The guidance and advice is sincerely appreciated. Hope everything works out well - I have some time to prepare as I am here until the end of the year.

Best wishes to everyone and good hunting!

In 1980 I moved from Maryland to California, didn't take the guns until later. I took them all on a commercial flight, which caused a little commotion at the ticket counter. I ended up having a conversation with the baggage supervisor, reading from their rules. Much to their surprise, there were regulations allowing specified amounts of "small arms ammunition". I wouldn't do this again, things have changed.

The last four moves, I have buried the guns and ammunition deep in the forward section of the pickup bed, out of sight. We were fortunate not to be stopped or bothered on any of those runs. The last time we pulled a trailer with a car on it. I wonder if they would search a trailered car trunk, or not. It might depend on the demeanor of the driver and the appearance of the rig.

You might also think about buying a "Job Box" like those used on construction sites.
