Thank you Norman! However, fairness requires me to point out that Prussian Marshal Blucher played a major role in this victory. Napolean resolved to engage the "allied" armies separately, before they could come together. Wellington and Blucher met earlier and agreed that in that event they would meet at Waterloo. Napolean engaged the Prussians at Ligny and defeated them. Blucher was trapped under his dead horse leading a cavalry charge (this is a Field Marshall!) In his absence Gneisenau commands the Prussian army to retreat back to Prussia. Blucher finally catches up with his retreating Army, countermands Gneisenau's order saying "I agreed with Wellington to meet at Waterloo. I gave my word. We shook hands"! Meanwhile the British had been engaged by the French at Quatre Bras, and had withdrawn to Waterloo. The British army held at Waterloo, even defeating Napolean's Imperial Guard (La Guarde Recule!) and was finally beginning its counter attack against Naploean when Blucher's Prussian army arrived on the battlefield! The tide had turned and Napolean was defeated. A little more complicated than your version, but I must be true to a great General (both of them!). Incidentally there is a pub called the Prince Blucher in Twickenham! They haven't forgotten! Peter Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong;

You are quite correct. Blucher did finally arrive (no thanks to Gneisenau) rather late in the day, but the victory went to the British + Prussians. Even so, Wellington said it was a "Close run thing."
