I am seeing change for sure. Are any of you?

What crazy times we live in. Yes, springtime is beautiful here. Right now the redbuds, wild plums and dogwood are ablaze. The above is a fall photo but shows the remoteness of this area.

Last night, after dark, in the rain, a truck came up to the house. Some guy wearing a big cowboy hat and a woman passenger. They were 'lost' they said. Were looking for land for sale. In the dark. In the cold rain. Right.

There is property for sale across the road from me which is more than likely what they were looking for. A large parcel of rough and tough Ozarks land. Recently, land has been selling at extremely high prices and almost as fast as people advertise it out here. Scary fast and scary expensive. We are talking non tillable remote land. Hilly, rock and clay with overgrazed and over hayed fields, woodlands (generally recently logged out too) overrun with red cedar and crappy, falling down fences. 'Town' is not just around the corner. There is no pizza delivery out here.

Though this area is big beef country very few people wear cowboy hats. The ones that do are generally real estate agents or lawyers- Wanna be seen types. I have a pretty long driveway and my house is not visible from the road.

Are the rest of you seeing the flight to remote areas like me?

I been watching people move in and move right back out again when spring comes for over 20 years now.
I guess the 6-8' average snowfall, and negative 30 temps, are more than most can take.

hell,, sometimes I wonder why I stay here.

Folks are moving in in droves around here. They claim that Williamson Co. is the fastest growing in the country + seeing the traffic anymore I can believe it. When I go into the post office now the place is crowded + I don't know a soul.

Never mistake motion for action.

That being said, that is why I still live in the country + the city folks can keep it.

Ann, a saying aroun here about wannabes has been for some time, "Big hat, no cattle". Ann Richards used that as her campaign against opponent Clayton Williams in the governors race when Clayton made the ultimate stupid remark "That when rape is inevitable, you might just lay back + enjoy it."

My goodness, there are some stupid people walking amongst us.

I would not be surprised this summer if there are widespread power outages around the country. Summers very hot and humid out here. 'Urban escapees' might not enjoy that.

Coming from the great white north myself, there is a reason I left it. Got real tired of spending all my time plowing snow.

I saw similar when we lived in Logan. I'd have stayed there but employment considerations came first. We are anchored with grandbabies, or I'd think about moving back (but further north, Logan and Smithfield have grown uncomfortably in the intervening years).

You would be welcomed back here. The market is booming here. We moved to Garden City and life is much better! I’m sure the summer crowd will make up for it.

Logan sure isn't the quiet little town it used to be.
I think half the college kids stayed after graduating.

I'll still drive down there for Pizza at the college hang out though.

I was thinking Cub River Canyon, but it might be crowded too by now...

sade to say but its getting crowded all over. I commented to a friend of mine the other day about how pissed off I was in the volume of traffic. He said something that had me looking at it from a different perspective. He said that if you are out there on the highway then you are part of the problem. A new pair of glasses indeed however I was here 1st. or if not 1st then when it was still a great place to live before inserts brought L.A.,Phoenix, e.g. driving + attitudes with them.

Ms. Ann,

In Texas we are supposed to be energy independent, yet we had a significant freeze (by our standards) and it shut us down. I think millions were without power. Many are still suffering the issues from broken pipes. A company has been “improving” the gas lines where I live. The only hot shower I’ve had has been at my gym. I suppose I could have worse problems and actually do, but it’s not worth airing here.

Roland,

My area went bad long ago. Williamson County, however, has been super dirty from a legal standpoint. I still hope you have a good outcome with your Jeep.

I hate that some good fellas I know on this forum have had some bad luck. We will all look forward to better days.

That is a good location. However, I believe your assumption is correct in that it is getting crowded. Me and my wife were re-routed from Logan canyon to (through) Preston on Saturday, due to a fatality in the canyon. Off the highway to the East, right before you get to Franklin is booming and there are A LOT of new houses. These high constructions are not really slowing down n the building boom.

Our rental house in Logan has been impacted due to the "boom". My wife called and told me that our property taxes went up $59.00 in just one year (we bought the house last April). Unbelievable what is going on in Northern Utah.

Looks like that land has sold across the road from me- $499,000. Un effing believeable. Frowner

The escapees from Suburbiaistan and Urbanistan will bring their ruinous values out here too. No doubt property taxes will rise as well.

Ann, I got my appraisal statement from Travis Co. today as the county line runs through my property. Last years evaluation on taxable value on my homesteaded house was 15K, this year it is 128K. I also got a flyer in my mailbox on the new proposed bond for more schools. 146 million dollar bond just for the L.H. school district, but they swear it won't raise our taxes. We are rapidly being taxed out of existence.

I have lived all over; 13 states, 7 countries outside of the USA.

The increased population of the world, increase of socialism, and rise in the number of assholes makes me long to move back to Wyoming, Montana or Alaska and set up shop.

The problem is that tons of other assholes have already done just that, and they have been doing it to escape big cities from both coast and poverty from the South and Gulf Coast.

I have 11 years until I can retire from this career, and I am not sure where the hell we are going to move when we do it.

What I wouldn’t do for only 6-8 feet of snow

Preston from Garden City is a lengthy detour, but there aren't a lot of paved roads that go over.
I'd have been tempted to declare a holiday and go to Bloomington Lake for a little fly fishing.
