This e-mail from Holland's Long Range this morning had me going 100 percent. REVOLUTIONARY NEW CARTRIDGE 7.7 MM TOMCAT PATENTS APPROVED in 2023 We are happy to announce the issuance of our patents (USPO #6679-321-44789F - #6760-4491-33984B) for the NEW 7.7mm TOMCAT long-range cartridge utilizing solid fuel propellant technology. This has been a 52-month project in collaboration with LAPUA, DUPONT POWDERS, FEDERAL PRIMERS, and SWISS DEFENSE BULLET CORP. A shoulder-fired, long-range sporting cartridge that exceeds all past performance standards will soon be available to the shooting public, as well as select military units around the world. While many consider the 7.7mm caliber to be the optimal bore for mild-recoiling long-range work, there were several obstacles that needed to be overcome in order to produce a practical cartridge that lives up to the caliber’s potential. DESIGN PARAMETERS First, the cartridge had to be functional in a long action with a magazine box of 3.800 inches. Second, muzzle velocity needed to approximate 3600 FPS using a 200 grain bullet with a G-7 BC of .490, while keeping recoil levels below 28 foot-lbs. Enter SWISS DEFENSE BULLET CORP., which is primarily a defense contractor for the European market. We had difficulty getting them on board due to the UKRAINIAN war and supply-chain difficulties. Once contracts were signed and a hefty deposit was paid, however, we were off and running. The finished product was a 200-grain masterpiece of gravity-defying, wind-bucking aerodynamics that leaves one speechless. It features a 15-degree rebated boattail design, a wasp-shaped straight section (similar to the Herters design from decades past), and a user-friendly tangent ogive. Jacket material is a proprietary blend of molybdenum and cupro-nickel, which is Teflon 3Z infused (reducing friction, minimizing fouling, and adding roughly 100 fps. more velocity than a conventional copper jacket). The core is a proprietary blend of lead, molybdenum, and cobalt powder. This combination allowed us to achieve a perfect center of gravity on this 1.437-inch-long bullet. Third, a case had to be designed so that barrel life was decent, given the previously mentioned performance standards. Test barrels have gone 3200 rounds; accuracy remains less than .5 MOA. LAPUA was responsible for case development. Again, we had delays due to the conflict in UKRAINE. They were, however, able to keep delays within reason, given the overseas conflict. Case head dimensions were .535, case OAL was 3.00 inches, shoulder diameter was .490, shoulder angle 36 degrees, and a neck length of .410, which aids in convergence angle efficiency and contributes to longer barrel life. Fourth, since traditional propellants were unable to achieve these results, a suitable alternative had to be found. This proved to be the most difficult task of all. With a grant from a US defense contractor (whom I can't disclose), we joined efforts with DUPONT to produce a solid Duplex-Based propellant ignited by a smaller charge of proprietary powder. The ratio of burn rates in the solid propellant was erratic and caused extreme pressures in load development. HP WHITE laboratories did the initial testing (we destroyed several actions in the process). However, once the precise ratios of the different burn rates were established, we were able to achieve a MV of 3580-3620 FPS with a 200-grain bullet. Pressure testing was rated at 62,000 PSI from a 26-inch barrel. I am pleased to announce that LOADED ammunition will be produced by LAPUA and available through numerous wholesale suppliers in the US. Ammunition cost is expected around $85-90.00 for a box of 25 cartridges. I have licensed JGS, CLYMER, and HUGH HENRIKSEN to produce chambering reamers for licensed gunsmiths around the country. Barrels will require a 7.3-inch twist; to obtain specified velocities we recommend a barrel length of at least 26 inches. If you are looking for the ULTIMATE long-range cartridge look no further than the 7.7mm TOMCAT. Ballistic DATA: Muzzle velocity 3600 FPS; G-7 BC .490; Elev. 1000' Temp. 59 degrees, Humidity 50% utilizing a 200yd. zero. Drop at 1000 yds. 12.5 MOA; Wind Drift 2.25 MOA; This amazing combination produces 1340 Foot-lbs. of energy at 1400 yds. Performance testing on game animals will be done this August in South Africa. I've purchased 200 cull permits for testing and evaluation. Willing participants will include, kudu, eland, wildebeest, gemsbuck, zebra, and waterbuck. I expect the first container of ammunition to hit US shores around November 5th. We are limiting purchases to 500 rounds per customer to gain as large of a market share as possible. Stay tuned for more details via the NEWSLETTER. Ron Spomer of SPOMER OUTDOORS is expected to do a YOUTUBE video of this new cartridge as soon as the snow melts at his off-grid Hacienda in Malad, Idaho. (sometime in late June early July) In the meantime enjoy our April Fools Day spoof from Hollands Shooters Supply. Be safe, stay healthy, and shoot straight. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author | ||
