I was checking on my memory surrounding an old friend and came on this article about Ben Hurtig, who I didn't know.....after this was written he died at age 93, March 27.2006. Sounds like a helluva guy.

Henry Allingham, at the age of 112, is the last survivor of the Battle of Jutland and the last original member of the Royal Air Force which was formed on 1 April 1918. He also served on the Western Front on the Somme and at Ypres.

Stoker John Capes was on a British Submarine on the way back from Malta during WW2 when it hit a mine. He was one of the few recorded instances of escape from a doomed sub. A hellua guy as well.
