I just picked up a couple of fallow deer from a taxidermist. They were nice fallow, but the mount looks like crap. I had wanted them mounted on a semi-sneak form. He put "custom" woden spacers on the back because the antlers would hit the wall. These spacers are up to 3 inches thick and will make the animal stick out that far from the wall. Any options without a complete recape and remount?

SevensTaxidermist should have added more shoulder to the mount instead of spacers. Since the cape is cut now, maybe having a habitat put in back?

L. David KeithPost pics. That would give better options. Remount is no problem as Fallow capes are readily available.

DCS MemberSorry for the crappy phone pictures. It looks like there may be enough cape to build up the back to have it sit flush. I didn't get pictures of the chocolate, but it's the same story.

TMTAXIDERMYTo me that is very unsatisfactory. He should have consulted with you before he did something like that! there are several options for the taxidermist other than what he did.

does the whole mount look like crap or just that part?
I'd let the taxidermist know that he should have discussed this modification prior to doing it. I'd take off that extension piece, add a mount bracket suitable for a pedestal and do it that way.

I can't imagine a taxidermist who doesn't realize the antlers won't clear the wall before he gets that far along with the mount.
I would be demanding my money back and/or he get another cape and do the job right if you still want a wall mount.

Hard to see from the pics but are the antlers set correctly? If they are, for sure the form should have been modified or not used at all.
Most likely new capes would have to be found and start from "go" to fix the problem.
Just can not believe this guy did not consult with you before he started the work and screwed your capes.

DCS MemberI will not name him, but will tell you where he is to warn others. He is located in Bangs, TX and is an older gentleman. Bangs is a small town west of Brownwood. I don't think there are too many taxidermists in Bangs. It was a mistake on my part by settling on location and price, but I still did not expect what I received. A short trip to Jerry in Abilene would've made more sense. Now by bargain hunting, I will have to pay even more (assuming I can't get my money back). I'm too embarrassed to put this crap on my wall.

HughiamThat's a pretty common problem with big fallow. A Semi Sneak usually will fix it, but if not cut the head off, drop the chin and reattach it. I usually have fallow capes, but Im out right now. Try Tim Azlin in Clute TX, he should have one.

collectorYikees...ok here is a possible solution.
Maybe the back could be cut at an angle so the head angle would drop and then you can get rid of the extension. You will have to hang them in a room with high ceiling, high up and then I am sure everything will look fine. Good luck.
