Finally got my last year's Africa hunting trophies back and they all look good, tho the shoulder mounts are not done yet since I chose to have those done by a local taxidermist. All the hide tanning for rugs/pillows I had done over in Africa. One of the trophies I shot was a Southern Impala and since I already have a shoulder mount from my first Africa trip I opted just to get the skull/horns from that and have the animal skined for a flat rug due to the unique black marking on each side of the tail. Now that I've had this stuff at home for a week or so, I finally got around to comparing horn length from both impalas and find the one I shot last year is a good 4 inches longer than the first one. While I'm not a inches trophy hunter, now I'm thinking maybe I want to get this one shoulder mounted too, tho after my other shoulder mounts are done, BUT now I need a cape to get this done. I know sometimes taxidermist can get replacement capes and that adds to the mount cost, but I was thinking maybe I can get a replacement cape thru this forum in some fashion and not have to pay as much as letting the taxidermist get it for me.
If I do find a cape for sale, and especially if its already tanned, does the tanning method matter, as I understand that sometimes the flat rug tanning and cape tanning for mounts is a different process. Just asking here or looking for ideas. Since my other mounts won't be done for 9-11 months I have lots of time to get this delima sorted out. In the mean time I'll just prep this as a plain skull mount piece in my trophy room.

You should look on the taxidermy.net for sale forum. IMO the best find would be a good condition, recently wet tanned cape from a respected tannery (Carolina Fur Dressers for example). Have your taxidermist inspect it and store it in the freezer until you are ready. You may also find one off this site. An impala cape will not be hard to find. Good luck.
