I took a Burchell's Zebra and I just got all my trophies. The mane is kinda laying down from the bubble wrap packaging during shipment. He's mounted on the wall and he looks like he just got up and his hair (mane) needs to be combed What should I use on it to get it to stand back up like he was in the wild? Any help is appreciated. Trophyman, Wet the mane by pulling a thick toothed comb dipped in water through the hair (try to not get the mount wet) and apply a cheap hair mousse to it. Work the mousse through with the comb. Cut chip board (soda or beer case box) into long strips the height of the mane (may need a few strips to card the whole mane), now card the mane by placing a piece of the chip board on either side of the mane and clip together with large paper clips. Make sure the mane remains in an erect position while drying. Should be dry in a few days to a week as you don't have much humidity in Bakersfield. Will stand up beautifully after it dries. PM me if you need any further help. Kind regards, Mary Taxidermist/Rugmaker

I've spent a few hours combing a day with a course tooth wet comb on mine and it's slowly getting there. Haven't put any mousse yet because it's still too squashed to want to try to set it as it is. Is that an acceptable way to do it? I've been careful not to get the hide wet, just the mane, and it's pretty dry here in Texas. Seems like patience and being very careful should work to eliminate my mare's bad hair day?

Tom, You can go ahead and put the mousse on now, that is what will help unmuss the mane. Wet the mane, apply the mousse, comb the mane erect as you press it between the chip board and then paper clip the chip board. I just returned home from Texas yesterday and man is it humid there! I would leave the mane in the paper clipped chip board for a week or two and all should be well. You can do the process again if the mane isn't as upright as you would like after the first groom.
