I am getting a zebra skin from a recent trip to
RSA,wondering if tanning was required to preserve
it. The outfitter said it could last 20plus years
after dip and packing in salt.He had one in the
lodge that was about 20 years old,not tanned but
somewhat soft to the bare foot.Any info on this will be helpful. thanks Rug

The only way to truly have a soft hide is to have it tanned. Salting is done to temporarily prevent rot and to set the hair prior to tanning. Good tanning also includes thinning of the flesh side of the hide. A salted hide is not meant for decoration, just tempory preservation. (I didn't mean to rhyme [Smile] )

Congrats on the hunt. - Gib
