Spouse is on the way home with an elk mount[shoulders/head/rack et al] and wants to hang it above the fireplace -- it's stone and goes all the way to the ceiling. [all our other mounts have been skulls so far] Any tips, advice before he gorges himself with the rack or some other heinous thing that could go wrong?

Appreciate any suggestions!

Seriously, all I can suggest is to be careful so you don't drill the thing too high so the antlers fail to clear the ceiling. Obviously, you also need to drill a couple of inches BELOW maximum height of the hole so you can get the thing up and over the hanger on the back of the animal.
I have never hung on stone so I cant help much there.....Get big, heavy masonry bolts......use a couple of heavy guage washers to space the animal properly and tightly against the wall and hold the animal on the bolt (plus they add extra security.....less likely to come crashing down). You will, obviously have to adjust the bolt in slowly to test the tightness to which it holds the animal flat against the wall. Obviously, the less he hangs off the wall the better.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, JTG! He got a friend to help him so I didn't have to try to help. That was a BIG elk! Will post a picture later, I'm not sure how to download from the camera.

I can't wait to see it at night with a fire in the fireplace! The ceiling lights are in just the right places in the ceiling that it looks like that is where it was meant to be.

JTG,

I measured 3 or 4 times and luckily got it hung in an appropriate place, ie it fit!
