GraftonNice looking warthog JP. There is alot of work that goes into getting these guys right. Most are way over painted. Yours looks very good.

Excellent JP! You put a lot of effort into that mount and it shows.

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

Hunting For AdventureExcellent mount. I agree that some are over painted. Seems like warthogs and buffs can either be awesome or bad mounts.

graybirdVery nice wartie!!
Has anyone ever made a warthog rug? Something like a bear or lion with the head mounted with the rest of the body like a flat rug?

Mary Hilliard-KruegerIn 20 years, I have made rugs of wild boar and many a javelina, but never a warthog. Would be an interesting looking rug!
John, I agree with Grafton, your finish work is exceptional. The mount has a very realistic fleshy look to it, not he usual overpainted skin tones one sees all to often on a warthog mount.
Kind regards,
Mary

Aspen Hill AdventuresA question for the professionals:
Why do warthogs need to be painted up? Does the hide not tan well to natural skin tones? I have seen some really badly done mounts, they almost look like some salt water fish mounts that are overly and brightly painted.

GraftonAnn, A tanned warthog skin has color tones that are not found on live ones. They often have yellowish areas on them. Also the top layer of epidermis often peels off in places, leaving discolored areas. Some need more work than others. A live warthogs skin actually has pink undertones to it but you would never know it as they are always covered in dried mud. It does not take a lot of paint, just small amounts of different tones in an airbrush to help blend everything together. Also the area under the eyes must be darkened and made to look wet as they do on the live animal.
The real trick as with applying paint to any mount - is to not over do it! (think blending, not covering with paint)
On animals that have little body hair- warthogs, hippo, rhino, elephant, etc.. the "unatural" look of an unpainted, mounted skin would be very obviously unrealistic.

They are ugly, but fun to hunt.
A warthog is the only mount my wife refuses to let in the house.
