strapmanCaribou Antlers in Velvet
If I shoot a Caribou or Reindeer in velvet, can the velvet be removed and can I obtain a nice clean rack? Or will it have a trashy effect?

GracedogI have removed the velvet from the antlers of caribou while still in the field on my two caribou hunts. One thing to note is that the antlers will be clean as a whistle when you remove it, and then will be covered blood within hours, as blood continues to seep out of the antlers. You should submerge the rack in water after removing the velvet while you are still in the field. Then, after getting home, do the same until the blood stops seeping out. They will be easier to stain without blood stains.

Some taxidermists can work with antlers in velvet. IMO looks great.

L. David KeithTie a rope to your antlers and toss them into a stream or lake. Make sure they are secured and totally submerged. Leave for 24 hours if possible. As mentioned, most if not all of the blood will dissipate and leave them in much better condition. A word of caution: Bears/Wolves are a concern if they are in your area.
