markopolo50I have a general question. How do you remove the horns from the skull so the inside can be cleaned? Boil?

The Artistry of WildlifeNEVER boil sheep horns !!!! , they will turn dark The keratin and other proteins and oils in the horns will come to the surface and make them very very dark. They are macerated in water till the slip of then the SKULL ONLY is boiled and cleaned the horns are washed and let dry.
Never boil a HORN! , Every African horn is always almost black because of boiling

markopolo50That is what I thought. I haven't ever had a sheep mounted until this year. I got a nice Dall and when I went to get it I asked them why they darkened the horns? And the cape had a rust line on it, claimed it came from my metal tag. I didn't accept it. They are looking for another cape but what can be done to the horns? I think they are ruined as far as natural color???? Thanks for any info. Mark

The Artistry of WildlifeShould have chosen us for the mount, that's an afterthought now so lets fix this...your in Mich. The rust mark that should have not happened anyone worth their salt could have and would have prevened that. It's probably fixable but if the guy doesn't have any experience at it he won't know what to do. rust remover and re-bleaching can be very helpful. But that is a process we don't let out of the back room. The Horns, NO problem at all bring them in or ship them and we will repaint them to the exact color of any picture you provide. I guarantee you will be happy with the final color.
I have the "Best In the World" finisher working for me and repainting horns of clients that other taxidermist discolor is a pretty regular thing around here.
Call the studio monday thru saturday 9 to 5 and we can help you, looking for dahl cape, they are avail. Pricey but available.

markopolo50Thanks for your offers. Had a big argument over the rust line. It was a 4" straight line on the side of the neck. Of course when the cape was sent to them the tag was locked on the bottom of the cape in a circle. There was plenty of cape as my guide cut it in front of hind quarters and that is where the tag was. I think they cut the tag off, straightened it out and laid it on the hide for a while, probably folded up. Either way, they did it and are going to remount it with another cape. My biggest concern now is the horns as I doubt they can recreate them. I sent them all the pics I had of the sheep in the field. We will see. I may be getting in touch with you anyway. Thanks again for your advise and offers of help.

markopolo50I have a feeling he will be seeing me. I thought this taxidermist would be good as they donate and set up a big display at our local SCI fundraiser. In fact that is where I bought the taxi work. Makes me think they did a sub par job because they knew it was donated work. I am so upset with this as this was probably a hunt of a lifetime. On top of all this I developed a hernia during my training of this hunt, went on the hunt anyway and just had surgery 4 days ago. Hopefully it will end good. Thanks for the vote of confidence of the Artistry. They are within driving distance of me!!

Cut away the connective tissue at the base of the horn, soak in cold clean water, change the water daily. Between seven and ten days, the horns should slip off. Of course this does not work on mature sprinbuck, impala, black and blue wildebeest and red hartebeest. The skulls should be tied in a manner that does not allow them to be immersed. If the horns are contaminated with fat, a quick boil with a dish-wash detergent will help.

Well I got my Dall sheep back. The cape looks good as does the actual mount. The horns are presentable but not like they were. I appreciate all the kind words as it was a great hunt.

Lots of positive response from this base and lion. I have a lot of clients that have now wanted the solid bases and small inlayed cut outs for ground.
It is very easy to clean also.
