I am seeking information on long term storage of Taxidermy. I will be out of the country for at least 2 years and will not be able to tend to them.

One of my thoughts is to build wood crates to place them in, and then store them in a climate controlled facility.

Any thought on how to do this, products to help with this or a company that could help, would be greatly appreciated.

If it just the capes, as long as they have been fleshed & salted, I believe they can last for years. My taxidermst once told me, about my African capes, they will last a lifetime even better if you freeze them. For mounted stuff, I would build crates for them, I do not think any special type of wood would necessary just some cheap plywood or particle board and they could be built yourself with no difficulty. And store them in a climate controlled facility.

I had a house in northern MN up until 2003; most of my taxidermy was in that house. They have been in storage since. I have checked them at least once per year, and they are doing just fine.

One point about climate controlled storage: in northern MN in the winter, heating cold air is actually more damaging than letting the stuff sit in cold temperatures, as the air will have an extremely low humidity once it is warmed from -20 to 70.

I took my stuff and covered it in bubble wrap to keep out any bugs; some stuff was in crates, but most was not.
