I am getting closer to deciding what to do with some of the trophies I got.I was considering a pedestal mount on a Sable.
Assuming I provide the wooden pedestal,personally I dont see much difference to a reg shoulder mount,in terms of work for the taxi.The reason I anm posing the question is that I am ready to admit innocenec.Why would a pedestal be more or significantly more expensive then a shoulder mount.thanks

in a pedestal mount. the only thing that cost more is the pedestal. The mounts that I had done are the same price, shoulder or pedestal.

That's a legitimate question!

When I owned my shop, I charged a flat rate of $40.00 extra for a pedestal mount if the form was a standard form that did not need to be altered. That paid for the extra work to finish off the back of the mount. On a standard shoulder mount, the hide is pulled around to the back and stapled - not to be seen against the wall. Not so with the pedestal. It has to have a finished look which takes more time - thus more cost.

The story is different, however, if a form has to be altered from a standard shoulder mount to a pedestal. When I owned my shop there were not as many pedestal forms as there are now so I had to do a lot of modification. Taking a wall form and turning it into a pedestal is more work than you think . . . you have to install a mounting system to attach it to the base, cut off the backboard if necessary, add the pedestal shape and sculpt it to the shape you wanted, and then finish off the back of the mount as stated above. There's a lot more time involved which meant I had to charge more. I normally charged the cost of a shoulder mount + 50% for a custom pedestal mount. (the pedestal was also extra, depending on what the client wanted.

JDS is right on.
Only other thing I would say is that ped forms cost a bit more and are more trouble mounting because there is no good solid way to attach them to the mounting stand.
You also many times have to modify the form when it comes to the attachment schem.
An average of $100 more would not be out of line.

I know that it's time consuming making a way to attach them. Forming a crescent shaped back from a straight one. Then lining it with something either Leather, gold braid, Fleck stone etc.

I've seen some really nice pedestals mounts.I've seen even nicer half mounts.Hopefully my gemsbok in half mount from last June will turn out good.

Agree with all the above.
1/3 of the species i do down here require a custom made pedestal or i buy from the states if available.(Which also cost more).
I add roughly 20% to sh/mount cost.
Actual pedestal is additional.

I prefer doing pedestals though.
