In 2001 I shot a young steenbok in RSA. Since this was my first African animal I wanted a shoulder mount. And last year I finally received it. At first glance it looked great. But after some studying I have a question. The animal was young, and when I shot it, there was a sharpe edge halfways up the horn. And the tips was much thinner than the rest. When the animals get older the tips will get thicker and the edge would "disappear" (I was told). But on the mount this edge was gone, and the base and tips had more similar thickness.. Anyone who knows what happened? Is it normal that taxidermist will remove it, so that it will get a "nicer" look? Or does it "fall off" during the process (for one or another reason)..? I just want my mounts as they appeared when I shot it..

Are you sure it is the same animal? Happened to me once, I got the wrong fox fur back from the taxidermist. I could prove it with pictures, and the second give away was a repaired exit hole, where I shot mine frontal in the chest with a .22 WMR, no exit hole. Nothing could be done...just a mix up...bummer... Frans

Well... I really hope so.. The lenght of the horns, and the space between them are the same.. I`ve tried to contact them, but no reply so far. I`ll talk to my booking agent. They are responsible for the taxidermy as well.. Thanks for your reply!
