How do you green score a white tail deer?
Also, how does one attempt to be put in the record book?
Thank you.

Scoring sounds simple but is somewhat difficult. In short several measurements are made on each side plus the spread and any variance is deduducted for an official score. Roughly on a whitetail the lenght of each beam plus the lenght of each tine plus a circumference basically between each tine, these are compared to the opposite side and any variance is deducted plus the inside spread. Thats is a score, a green score would be an unofficial score assigned prior to the 60 day drying period.
You need to contact either the B&C or P&Y to get in touch with an official scorer in your area. They will have you fill out a statement of circumstances surrounding the animal and if it meets the minimum score of 180 or 125 depending on which ranking it 'll make the book.
I had one deer make P&Y which is for bow kills back in 1990 and I was required to pay a fee of $25.00 for the scoring, the scorer came to my house picked up the rack scored it and returned it several weeks latter. You can get all the info you need from their web sites it you do a search under Boone & Crocket or Pope & Young good luck

raamw, if you "paid" the measurer to score your rack you need to call P&Y and give them his name. They will drop him like a hot tatter!!!
We appointed measurers do it for the love of it and are never to except payment of any kind, other then maybe expenses to drive or fly somewhere.
Most likely the $25 was given to P&Y for proccessing fees and your certificate.
dsk1969, raamw is correct, call P&Y, or check the web page, and they will give you the names and phone numbers of the measureres in your area.
Hope your buck makes the min score.

I stand corrected, it was a fee to P&Y, not for scoring, as I now recall the scorer was telling me alot of hunters get scored and never pay the fee to get it entered so scoring costs nothing, its been a while since I went through the process.

Thanks. I am a rifle hunter only and think I should have asked about raw score...score before deductions (I think). Basicly, where do you measure?
Thanks for the help.

The measurements for total score b/4 deductions:

inside spread

each beam lenght

each tine from a point parallel to the top of the beam b/4 and after each of the tine

circimference;
b/t skull rim on antler and first tine, probably brow tine in most instances

circumference of antler between each tine except the end point of the beam itself

Now in a typical 8 point buck with brow tine you would have 4 circumference measurements for each side
2 beam lenghts
3 tine lenghts for each side
1 inside measurements

If I remember it has to be done with a steel tape ruler down to 1/8 inch

You would add up the above scores for a gross measurement

On a typical whitetail you would compare identical measurements and deuct the difference to arrive as the official score 60 days or more after the kill/

Now lets say your deer has 9 points, gross score would include the odd point but its value in inches would be deducted for the official...meaning it would be scored as if it was an eight point

Now if it is a non typical there would only be a gross score with nodeductions

to meet P&Y 180" measurement it has to be huge in a 10 pt and unbelievable in 8pts or less.

hope this helps

Thanks!
I found the Boone & Crockett web site and they now have a nice calculator to help you figure things.

The ones that I have had scored I went to the scorers, watched and learned. I also left a gift as they ask nor require a fee to score. Most do it out of enjoyment.

I think they measure the surface length of the points...not the height off the beam..... thus a long curved point would score longer than just its hieght off the main beam....same goes for the main beam....measured around the outside..... and the circumference is the SMALLEST circumference between the points that is being measured..... and the difference is ONLY between corresponding points from one side to the other.... not the total of one side verus the total of the other side......G1 right vs left...g2 right vs left...and so on.... that will most likely result in a much lower score than just comparing a total of one side vs the other......an example would be the first point on the left is 10" and on the right it is 6"... then the second point on the left is 6" and the second on the right is 10"..... comparing side to side they are equal!!!!....but the true score would deduct a total of 8" (4" per point comparison)on just those measurements.......bob
